How do I add a Gaposa remote, or pair a new one when the old one is lost?
With a working remote: hold its left back button until the motor moves, release, then within 5 seconds press the matching arrow on the new remote. With no working remote: power-cycle that motor only, then within 8 seconds hold the new remote's left back button and STOP until it jogs. That erases every remote; then pair the new one.
Key facts
- Adding a remote never erases the others: a Gaposa motor keeps several remotes, and one remote can run several shutters. Roll-A-Shield data
- After the working remote makes the motor move, you have 5 seconds to press the matching direction on the new remote. The motor does not move again; that is normal.
- The lost-remote method erases every remote paired to that motor, so re-pair any remote you are keeping afterward.
- Remote-operated Roll-A-Shield shutters ship with the remote already paired, so a new shutter needs no pairing. Roll-A-Shield data
- On a 5- or 16-channel remote, pair one channel at a time; Roll-A-Shield's technicians select the same channel number on both remotes. Roll-A-Shield data
Applies to: Gaposa radio (RTS) motors, including Sense and radio manual-override motors, with Gaposa handheld, on-wall, deluxe, 16-channel and key-fob transmitters. Gaposa solar motors pair the same way but are power-cycled at the panel connector. Somfy motors use a different method.
Which method do I need?
If any remote still runs the shutter, copy the new one from it; nothing is erased. If no remote works, you clear the motor's remote memory and pair the new remote from scratch.
| Situation | Method | What gets erased |
|---|---|---|
| A paired remote still works | Copy from the working remote | Nothing |
| The only remote is lost or broken | Power-cycle the motor, clear its memory with the new remote, then pair | Every paired remote |
| You want one remote to stop working | Delete that remote only | That remote alone |
| Solar shutter, no working remote | Solar reset: unplug the panel connector for 60 seconds first | Every paired remote |
On new Roll-A-Shield remote-operated shutters the remote is paired at the factory. If a remote has stopped working, try a new battery before re-pairing anything; see Remote stopped working and a new battery didn't fix it.
How do I add a remote when I have one that works?
Wake the motor with the working remote's left-hand back button, then press the matching arrow on the new remote.
- Run the shutter to about half height, or a little way off its limit, so you can see which way it moves.
- On the working remote, select only this shutter's channel. On the new remote, select the channel you want to use. Roll-A-Shield's technicians use the same channel number on both.
- On the working remote, press and hold the left-hand back button until the motor moves. Some are recessed; use a small eyeglass screwdriver.
- Note which way it went, and release. The motor stops.
- Within 5 seconds, press UP on the new remote if the motor moved up, DOWN if it moved down. A normal press is enough; Gaposa remote buttons need about a second to register.
- The motor does not move, and pressing the wrong arrow does nothing. Test the new remote.
- For a multi-channel remote, repeat from step 1 for each shutter, one channel at a time.
The same steps pair a Gaposa key fob or an on-wall remote. To reach the back buttons on an on-wall remote, snap the face plate off and pry the remote out at its two side notches; on a deluxe handheld, slide the back cover off; on the 16-channel, the buttons sit low above the A and B marks, and pairing uses A. A keypad pairs from a working remote too, with its factory code; see Gaposa keypad.
How do I pair a new remote when the old one is lost?
Clear the motor's remote memory with the new remote right after a power cycle, then pair it.
Safety: Cut power to the one motor you are pairing, at its breaker or by unplugging it if it plugs into an outlet. Any Gaposa motor that is power-cycled at the same time can be cleared too. If several shutters share one breaker and the motor is hard-wired, call (480) 921-0200 rather than opening any wiring. Following a published Roll-A-Shield guide does not void the warranty. Mains wiring must be done by a licensed electrician.
- Use a new Gaposa remote, or a channel that is not paired to any other motor within range.
- Switch the motor's power off, then on again.
- Within 8 seconds, hold the new remote's left-hand back button and STOP together until the motor jogs. Keep holding if a second jog follows. The motor's remote memory is now empty.
- Pair the remote: hold the left-hand back button until the motor moves, release, and within 5 seconds press the arrow that matches the direction it moved.
- Run the shutter both ways. If UP lowers it, fix the direction as on the Gaposa programming page, then check both limits. Gaposa's instructions do not say whether the limits survive a memory reset.
- Pair any other remotes you are keeping from this one, using the steps above.
Alternative: the white button on the motor head. Some Gaposa motors have a white programming button on the motor head, inside the shutter box. Holding it until the motor moves erases every paired remote and starts pairing, and you then press the matching arrow on the new remote. Gaposa's video lists it on 300-, 500- and 600-series motors without a manual override; override motors do not have it.
A solar motor has no breaker to switch. Unplug the motor-to-panel connector, on top of the box or inside the end cap, for a full 60 seconds; the rest is on Solar shutter motor: hard reset.
How do I find which channel a shutter is on?
Select one channel at a time on the multi-channel remote, press UP or DOWN briefly, press STOP, and watch which shutter moves. The channel LEDs (or the 16-channel's screen) show which channel is selected. Do this before pairing or adjusting anything: pair one channel at a time, and remember that a limit change goes to every shutter whose channel is selected.
Can one shutter have several remotes?
Yes. Any Gaposa shutter can be tied to several remotes at once (handheld, on-wall, key fob and keypad), and one multi-channel remote can run several shutters. Adding a remote never removes the others; only the delete and reset commands do.
For replacement remotes, see the Roll-A-Shield parts store, or Which Gaposa remote do I need? to choose one. For help pairing, call (480) 921-0200.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the old remote to pair a new one?
No. Without it, power-cycle that motor and, within 8 seconds, hold the new remote's left back button and STOP until the motor jogs. That clears the motor's remote memory; then pair the new remote. Every old remote stops working, which is what you want if one was lost.
Do I have to take the shutter box cover off?
Usually not. The power-cycle method needs only the breaker or plug for that one motor. The white button on the motor head is an alternative, but it is inside the box and not every Gaposa motor has one.
How do I stop one remote from working without affecting the others?
On the remote you want to remove, hold the left back button and STOP together until the motor makes one brief jog, then let go. Only that remote is deleted. Holding on for at least 15 seconds, through a second, longer jog, becomes a full reset that erases every remote.
Will a Somfy remote work with my Gaposa motor?
Use a Gaposa transmitter. Roll-A-Shield supplies Gaposa remotes with Gaposa motors and Somfy remotes with Somfy motors, and these steps are Gaposa's.
