How do I adjust the top or bottom limit on a Gaposa shutter motor?
On a Gaposa radio motor, select only that shutter's channel, then hold the right-hand back button together with the arrow for the limit you are changing (UP for the top, DOWN for the bottom) until the motor jogs. Nudge the curtain to the new stop, then hold STOP until it jogs again. Manual-override motors use screws instead.
Key facts
- Gaposa handheld and on-wall remotes have two small buttons on the back: the right-hand one sets limits and the left-hand one pairs remotes. On the 16-channel remote they sit low, above the B (limits) and A (pairing) marks. Roll-A-Shield data
- On a 5- or 16-channel remote, a limit change goes to every shutter whose channel is selected, so select one channel only. Roll-A-Shield data
- Top target on Roll-A-Shield shutters: about half of the first slat still showing at the top of the guide rail, so the bottom slat never leaves the rails. Roll-A-Shield data
- Bottom target: the whole curtain is off the axle and the hanging straps have pushed the top slat toward the box. If the curtain starts to roll back up the wrong way, stop at once. Roll-A-Shield data
- A motor that goes quiet after many back-and-forth runs has tripped its thermal protection and resets itself in about 15 minutes. Roll-A-Shield data
Applies to: Gaposa radio (RTS) tubular motors without a manual override, including Sense motors, with any Gaposa handheld, on-wall, 16-channel or key-fob transmitter that has the two back buttons. Gaposa manual-override (CMO) motors and wired switch motors set their limits with adjusting screws on the motor head; Somfy motors use a different sequence.
Which button changes a limit on a Gaposa remote?
The right-hand of the two small buttons on the back of the remote; the left-hand one is for pairing remotes and must not be used here.
Where those buttons sit depends on the remote:
| Gaposa remote | How to reach the back buttons |
|---|---|
| Basic handheld (single or multi-channel) | On the back; one may be recessed, so use an eyeglass screwdriver or paper clip |
| On-wall remote (single or 5-channel) | Snap the face plate off, then pry the remote out at the two side notches |
| Deluxe handheld (single or 5-channel) | Slide the back cover off in the direction of the arrows |
| Deluxe 16-channel | Slide the back cover off; the buttons sit low, above the A (left, pairing) and B (right, limits) marks |
On Roll-A-Shield remote-operated shutters the limits are set at the factory, so most owners are moving one limit, not setting both. If the motor has been reset or has never been programmed, use the full set-up on the Gaposa programming page instead.
How do I move the top or bottom limit?
Hold the limit button together with the arrow for the limit you want, nudge the curtain, and store it with STOP.
- On a multi-channel remote, select only the channel for this shutter. A limit change goes to every shutter whose channel is selected.
- Run the shutter to the limit that is wrong, so you can see the problem.
- Hold the right-hand back button and DOWN together (for the bottom) or UP together (for the top) until the motor makes a slight jog.
- The motor is now in momentary mode: it moves only while you press. Bump it a little at a time to where you want it to stop.
- Hold STOP for a few seconds. The motor makes a brief jog to confirm the new limit.
- Test: run a short way off the limit, press STOP, then run back to it.
Roll-A-Shield's own installation guide gives the same sequence for Gaposa RTS motors, with a paper clip on the right-hand inset button.
Where should the shutter stop?
At the top, the shutter should stop with about half of the first slat still showing at the top of the guide rail, so the bottom slat never leaves the rails. At the bottom, it should stop when the whole curtain has come off the axle and the hanging straps have pushed the top slat toward the box.
Stop: If the curtain starts to roll back up the wrong way around the axle at the bottom, stop it at once: the bottom limit is set too low. A top limit set too high can pull the bottom slat into the box; see Shutter ran past its limit and bent the top slats.
Unless the motor has obstacle detection, it will not stop by itself for something in the way. The Gaposa motors that have it are Gaposa Sense motors, 10-50 Nm (model codes XQ5E wired and XQ5EZ radio), and the Gaposa Autonomo solar motors. Go by the model code on the motor label, not by a part name. Keep hands, pets and furniture clear while you adjust the bottom.
What if the limit will not change?
Work through these before calling:
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No jog when you hold the two buttons | Wrong back button, or the remote battery is flat | Use the right-hand button; if the remote's light does not come on, change the battery |
| Two shutters changed at once | Several channels selected | Redo each shutter with only its own channel selected |
| The motor stopped answering after many runs | Thermal protection | Wait about 15 minutes and carry on |
| UP lowers the curtain | Direction is reversed | Fix the direction first, as on the Gaposa programming page |
| Limits keep moving by themselves | Often an egg-shaped slat roll | Run the curtain fully down so it picks up evenly, then adjust; if it keeps drifting see Motor moves by itself or won't hold its limits |
| The shutter has a manual-override crank | Manual-override (CMO) motor: its limits are not set from the remote | Adjust the screws on the motor head: see Gaposa override motor limits |
A Gaposa Sense motor adjusts the same way from a paired remote, but its first-time limit setting is different; see Gaposa Sense motor.
Should I use a favorite position instead of moving a limit?
Yes, if you only want the shutter to stop part-way some of the time. A favorite (intermediate) position is a third stopping point you call up on demand, and the top and bottom limits stay where they are. The limits must already be set before you can store one.
| What you want | What to do | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Store a favorite position | Stop the curtain where you want it, then hold UP and DOWN together | The motor jogs |
| Go to it | Hold STOP until the motor starts to move, then release; on a remote with a PRESET button, press PRESET | The curtain runs to the stored position |
| Clear it | From any position, hold UP and DOWN together | The motor jogs |
Gaposa's printed guides give the recall as holding STOP for 3 seconds.
Tip: Storing and clearing are the same key press. If you hold UP and DOWN on a motor with no favorite stored, you create one instead of clearing it. To move a favorite position, clear the old one, then store the new one.
What next
If the motor never jogs, it is not reaching programming at all; check power and the remote battery, then see Why won't my rolling shutter go up or down? For replacement remotes, see the Roll-A-Shield parts store. For help with a Gaposa limit, call (480) 921-0200.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to set both limits again from scratch?
No. Each limit is adjusted on its own: right-hand back button plus UP for the top, or plus DOWN for the bottom, then STOP to store. The other limit is not touched. Setting both from scratch is only needed after the motor has been fully reset.
Can I adjust the limits from the remote on a shutter with a manual override?
No. A Gaposa manual-override (CMO) motor gives up remote limit setting; its limits are two adjusting screws on the motor head.
I selected two channels and both shutters changed. Can I undo it?
Adjust each shutter again with only its own channel selected. A limit change goes to every shutter whose channel is selected, and Roll-A-Shield's technicians warn that two shutters adjusted together can end up out of step.
Why did my new shutter need its limits adjusted after installation?
Remote-operated Roll-A-Shield shutters leave the factory with the limits set, but if the curtain had slack and wound up egg-shaped on the axle, the stopping points can read wrong. Run the curtain fully down so it picks up evenly, then adjust.
