How do I program a Gaposa rolling shutter motor from scratch?

Short answer

Power only the motor you are programming. Hold the left back button until the motor moves, then within 5 seconds press the arrow matching the way it moved. Hold the right back button until it jogs, hold UP to the top and press STOP, then hold DOWN to the bottom and press STOP. Up limit first.

Key facts

  • Gaposa remotes have two small buttons on the back: the left one pairs and sets direction, the right one sets limits.
  • After the motor moves during pairing you have 5 seconds to press the matching arrow; the motor does not move again, which is normal.
  • Set the up limit before the down limit, every time.
  • The ideal up limit leaves about half of the first slat showing at the top of the guide rail. Roll-A-Shield data
  • On a multi-channel remote, select the single channel for that shutter first; with several channels selected every one of those shutters is reprogrammed. Roll-A-Shield data
  • A motor that stops responding after many cycles while you set limits has tripped its thermal protection and will reset itself in about 15 minutes. Roll-A-Shield data

Applies to: Gaposa radio (RTS) tubular motors, including the Sense obstacle-detection motors, with Gaposa Emitto handheld, on-wall, 16-channel and key-fob transmitters. Not for manual-override (CMO) motors, whose limits are set at the motor head, or for Somfy RTS motors.

A Gaposa radio motor is programmed entirely from the remote. There are two small buttons on the back of every Gaposa transmitter: the left one pairs a remote and sets direction, the right one sets the travel limits. Three rules carry the whole job: power only the motor you are programming, press the matching arrow within 5 seconds, and set the up limit before the down limit.

This page covers a motor that has never been paired, or one you have just reset. Roll-A-Shield pre-programs the remote and limits on shipped shutters, so a new Roll-A-Shield unit normally needs only a limit touch-up.

Following this Roll-A-Shield guide does not void your warranty; mains wiring must be done by a licensed electrician.

Before you start

  • Switch off power to every other Gaposa motor in radio range, or they may pair to the same channel. The alternative is the white button on the motor head, which puts only that motor into pairing; it exists on 300/500/600-series motors without a manual override and is recessed on the XS300. Pressing it also erases every remote already paired to that motor.
  • On a multi-channel remote, select only the channel you want this shutter on. If several channels are selected, every shutter on them gets reprogrammed.
  • If the remote's light does not come on, change its battery first.

How do I pair the remote and set the direction?

Hold the left back button until the motor moves, note which way it went, and release. Within 5 seconds press UP if it moved up or DOWN if it moved down. The motor does not move; the remote and the direction are now stored. If you press the wrong arrow nothing happens.

If UP now lowers the curtain, fix it before touching the limits: with the curtain at half height, hold the left back button until the motor moves, release, and within 5 seconds briefly press STOP. The motor jogs to confirm the direction has flipped.

How do I set the limits?

Tip: Up limit first, always. The down limit is stored second.

  1. Hold the right back button until the motor jogs.
  2. Hold UP. In limit mode the motor runs only while the button is held. Stop where you want the top: Roll-A-Shield's technicians leave about half of the first slat visible at the top of the guide rail.
  3. Press STOP. The motor jogs to confirm the up limit.
  4. Hold DOWN to the fully closed position and press STOP. The jog confirms the down limit, and the motor goes back to normal operation.

On a Gaposa Sense obstacle-detection motor you hold UP (or DOWN) for about 2 seconds and the motor runs on its own; press STOP to halt it and STOP again to store the limit.

If the motor goes quiet during this step after many cycles, it has tripped its thermal protection. Wait about 15 minutes and continue; nothing is lost.

How do I adjust one limit later?

You do not need to start over. Select the single channel, then hold the right back button together with the arrow for the limit you are changing (UP for the top, DOWN for the bottom) until the motor jogs. The motor is now in momentary mode; nudge it to the new position, then hold STOP for a few seconds until it jogs. Test by running past the limit, stopping, and running back.

Limits set in the shop can read wrong after installation if the slat roll had slack and wound up egg-shaped. Run the curtain fully down so it picks up evenly, then adjust.

How do I add a second remote, wall remote or key fob?

Put the curtain at about half height so you can see it move. On the working remote, with the right channel selected, hold the left back button until the motor moves and release. On the new remote, with its channel selected, press the same direction. The motor stays still and the new remote is paired. Repeat per channel, one at a time. Gaposa's video simply presses the arrow on the new remote; Roll-A-Shield's own video holds it for a few seconds.

Can I set a favorite (intermediate) position?

Yes, once the limits exist. Move the curtain to the position you want, then hold UP and DOWN together until the motor jogs. To recall it, hold STOP until the motor starts moving and release. To clear it, hold UP and DOWN together until the jog. Set and clear are the same key press, so doing it with no position stored creates one.

Which Gaposa motors are programmed differently?

  • A manual-override (CMO) motor has no remote limit setting; its limits are the two screws on the motor head, and the up-arrow screw sets the down limit. See What is a manual override?.
  • A solar (Autonomo) motor pairs the same way, but its reset is different: disconnect the panel for 60 seconds first. See How to reset a Gaposa motor.
  • A keypad pairs from a working remote using the factory code 11 + UP; Gaposa wireless keypads let you change the codes afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the sync button on a Gaposa remote?

On the back. The left button pairs and sets direction, the right button sets limits. On the 5-channel on-wall remote pop the face plate off and pry the transmitter out at its side notches; on the deluxe handhelds slide the back cover off; on the 16-channel the two recessed buttons sit low, above the A (left, pairing) and B (right, limits) marks.

Do I have to cut power to my other shutters?

With the remote method, yes: Gaposa's set-up instructions offer the white button on the motor head as the way to leave other motors powered, because only the motor whose button you press enters pairing. Pressing that button also erases any remote already paired to that motor.

Can I adjust the limits from the remote on every Gaposa motor?

Only on radio motors without a manual override. A manual-override (CMO) motor sets its limits with the two screws on the motor head, and a wired switch motor has no remote at all.

My shutter stopped responding half way through programming. Did I break it?

No. Repeated up-and-down cycles during limit setting trip the motor's thermal protection. Wait about 15 minutes and carry on.
