How do I reset a Gaposa rolling shutter motor?

Short answer

A Gaposa motor resets three ways: hold the left back button and STOP on a paired remote for at least 15 seconds; power-cycle the motor, then within 8 seconds hold the same buttons on an unpaired Gaposa remote; or hold the motor-head white button. A full reset erases every paired remote, so pair again and check the limits.

Key facts

  • Hold for at least 15 seconds. The motor makes a brief jog, then about 5 seconds later a second, longer jog, which is the full reset. Release after the first jog and only that remote is deleted.
  • A paired remote is not required: cut and restore power to that motor only, and within the next 8 seconds any Gaposa remote (or channel) that is not paired to another motor in range can reset it.
  • The white motor-head button exists only on 300-, 500- and 600-series Gaposa motors without manual override, and it is recessed on the XS300.
  • Gaposa is the standard (default) motor on Roll-A-Shield motorized shutters, and Somfy is also installed, so a reset question about a Roll-A-Shield unit is usually a Gaposa question. Roll-A-Shield data

Applies to: Gaposa 434 MHz radio motors (XS300, 300, 500 and 600 series) with Gaposa handheld, on-wall or key-fob remotes. Gaposa solar motors have their own hard-reset procedure, linked below.

When do I need a reset, and what does it erase?

Reset a Gaposa motor when a remote is lost, when the motor has been paired to a remote you no longer have, when it answers a neighbor's or a second shutter's remote, or when the programming is in a state you cannot explain. A full reset erases every paired transmitter from the motor. The Gaposa video does not say whether the limits survive, so check them before normal use.

Do not reset to fix a shutter that stops at the wrong height, runs the wrong way, or will not move at all. Those are a limit, a direction setting, and a power or thermal problem respectively, and each has its own page.

Method 1: reset from a paired remote

This is the normal method and the one in the video. You need a remote that already operates the shutter.

  1. On a multi-channel remote, select only this shutter's channel. Programming commands reach every shutter whose channel is selected, so selecting several could reset more than one motor.
  2. Reach the back buttons. Basic handhelds have them exposed. On the 5-channel on-wall remote, snap the face plate off and pry the transmitter out at the two side notches; deluxe handhelds slide their back cover off; on the 16-channel they sit recessed above the A (left) and B (right) marks and need a small screwdriver.
  3. Hold the left back button and STOP together.
  4. The motor makes a brief jog. Keep holding.
  5. About 5 seconds later it makes a second, longer jog (at least 15 seconds of holding in all). Release. The motor is now fully reset.
  6. Pair a remote, confirm the direction, and set or check both limits.

Releasing after the first jog is a different command: it deletes only the remote in your hand and leaves every other paired remote working. That is useful when one remote should stop controlling a shutter and the rest should not change.

Method 2: reset from any Gaposa remote after a power cycle

Use this when the paired remote is lost. Any Gaposa remote will do, including a new one out of the box, as long as the remote or channel you use is not already paired to another motor within radio range.

  1. Cut power to the target motor only, then restore it: for example at its breaker, or by unplugging the motor if it plugs into an outlet.
  2. Within 8 seconds of power returning, hold the left back button and STOP on the remote. (Our older video says 5 seconds; Gaposa's current manuals give 8.)
  3. Keep holding through the first jog and release after the second jog, as in Method 1.
  4. Pair, confirm the direction, and check the limits.

Safety: The 5-second window applies to every Gaposa motor that was just powered up, so if several shutters share one breaker they all become eligible for the reset together. Power-cycle only the motor you mean to reset, or unplug the others first. Switching a breaker is fine; do not open a junction box. Following a published Roll-A-Shield guide does not void the warranty. Mains wiring must be done by a licensed electrician.

Method 3: the white button on the motor head

Some Gaposa motors carry a white programming button on the motor head, inside the shutter box. Holding it with a screwdriver until the motor moves erases all paired transmitters; you then press the matching direction on the new remote to pair it.

Two limits on this method:

  • The button exists only on 300-, 500- and 600-series motors without manual override, and it is recessed on the XS300. Override motors do not have it; use Method 2 instead.
  • It means opening the shutter box. On a Roll-A-Shield unit the cover comes off with a few screws, but the roll and the axle are exposed once it is open. Keep hands clear of the curtain and do not run the motor with the cover off any longer than the test needs.

Which method should I use?

Situation Method
You have a working remote and want to start clean Method 1: paired remote, hold until the second jog
You want to remove one remote only Method 1, but release after the first jog
The remote is lost or dead Method 2: power cycle, then any Gaposa remote within 8 seconds
Remote lost and no other Gaposa remote available Buy any Gaposa remote; Method 2 works with an unpaired one
300-, 500- or 600-series motor without manual override, box already open Method 3: motor-head button
Solar motor Different procedure: disconnect the panel for a full 60 seconds first, see the solar reset page

What do I do after the reset?

  1. Pair the remote you intend to keep. The pairing procedure is on the Gaposa programming page.
  2. Run the shutter a short distance and confirm it moves the way the arrows say. Reverse the direction if not.
  3. Set or check the top and bottom limits.
  4. Pair any further remotes, wall remotes or key fobs one channel at a time.

If the motor will not enter programming mode at all, no jog at any point, the problem is upstream of programming: check for power at the motor, let a hot motor rest, and see Why won't my rolling shutter go up or down? For help with Gaposa programming, call (480) 921-0200.

Frequently asked questions

Will a reset fix a shutter that stops at the wrong height?

Usually not. A wrong stopping point is a limit problem; adjust the limit rather than wiping the motor. Reset when a remote is lost, a motor answers a remote it should not, or the programming is in an unknown state.

I released the buttons after the first jog. What did that do?

You deleted that one remote from the motor; every other paired remote still works. Pair the remote again from a working remote, or do the full 10-second hold if you meant to clear everything.

Does the reset work on a Somfy or SIMU motor?

No. The 5-second windows, the back-button combination and the motor-head button are Gaposa procedures. Somfy RTS and SIMU motors have their own programming and reset sequences.
