How do I program a Gaposa Sense motor: automatic limits, direction and reset?
Pair a Gaposa Sense remote: hold its PROG-TX button until the motor runs, then press the matching arrow within 5 seconds. Fix the direction before limits. To set limits, hold PROG-FC over 2 seconds, press STOP at the top and STOP again, then hold DOWN over 2 seconds. A full reset is PROG-TX plus STOP held at least 15 seconds.
Key facts
- Sense is Gaposa's auto-limit and obstacle-detection motor; the Sense motors with obstacle detection are 10 to 50 Nm, model codes XQ5E (wired) and XQ5EZ (radio).
- Gaposa's 80 to 120 Nm motors (XQ6E and XQ6EZ) do not have obstacle detection, even where a part name says Sense; go by the model code on the motor label. Roll-A-Shield data
- Change the direction before setting limits; changing it afterward means setting the limits again.
- In limit setting the top limit is always set first.
- A Sense motor that stops after many runs while you set limits has tripped its thermal protection and resets itself in about 15 minutes. Roll-A-Shield data
Applies to: Gaposa Sense tubular motors with obstacle detection, 10-50 Nm (XQ5E wired, XQ5EZ radio), with Gaposa radio remotes. The remote steps apply to radio (XQ5EZ) motors. Not Gaposa's 80-120 Nm motors, manual-override motors or Somfy motors.
What is a Gaposa Sense motor?
It is Gaposa's tubular motor that can set its own limits and stop on an obstacle. The Sense motors with obstacle detection are 10 to 50 Nm, with model codes starting XQ5E (wired) or XQ5EZ (radio).
Gaposa's larger 80 to 120 Nm motors, model codes XQ6E and XQ6EZ, are a different series without obstacle detection, even where a part name calls them Sense. Manual-override motors have none either. Go by the model code on the motor label, never by "EZ" (which only means a built-in radio) or by a part name.
On a Sense remote the buttons are numbered in Gaposa's guide:
| Button | Where | Does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 UP | Front | Raises the shutter |
| 2 STOP | Front | Stops the shutter |
| 3 DOWN | Front | Lowers the shutter |
| 4 PROG-TX | Back, left | Pairs a remote; changes direction |
| 5 PROG-FC | Back, right | Sets the limits |
How do I pair the remote and set the direction?
The same way as any Gaposa radio motor.
- Connect power to the motor you are programming, and only that one.
- Hold PROG-TX on the back of the remote until the motor starts running. Note the direction and release; the motor stops.
- Within 5 seconds, press UP if the motor ran up, DOWN if it ran down. The remote is paired.
- If UP now lowers the shutter, hold PROG-TX until the motor runs, release it, then press STOP. The motor makes a brief jog and the direction is reversed.
Tip: Fix the direction before setting limits. Gaposa's guide warns that changing it afterward means the limits must be set again.
How does automatic limit setting work?
In Gaposa's automatic mode the motor finds both limits by itself, top first. It runs up until the shutter's mechanical top stops halt it and stores that as the top, then after a few seconds runs down and stores the bottom when the shutter is completely closed.
Use the manual method below instead unless you have checked with us. The automatic top depends on mechanical top stops, while the top target on Roll-A-Shield shutters is short of that, with about half of the first slat still showing at the top of the guide rail. Gaposa's quick guide is also inconsistent about which back button starts the automatic mode, so call (480) 921-0200 before relying on it.
How do I set the limits by hand?
You pick the top; the motor finds the bottom.
- Hold PROG-FC for more than 2 seconds. The motor runs upward by itself.
- Press STOP when the shutter reaches the top position you want. The motor stops.
- Press STOP again. The motor jogs; the top limit is set.
- Hold DOWN for more than 2 seconds. The motor runs down by itself and stops when the shutter is completely closed; the bottom limit is set.
Set the top with about half of the first slat still showing at the top of the guide rail. Gaposa's set-up video shows the bottom stored the same way as the top, with STOP and then STOP again, so if your motor keeps running at the bottom, stop it with STOP and press STOP again to store. To nudge one limit later from a paired remote, see Adjust the top or bottom limit on a Gaposa motor.
If the motor goes quiet after several runs, its thermal protection has tripped; wait about 15 minutes.
How do I set a favorite position?
Stop the shutter where you want it and press UP and DOWN together until the motor jogs.
| Action | Buttons |
|---|---|
| Store | Stop at the position, press UP and DOWN together until a brief jog |
| Recall | Hold STOP for 3 seconds; the shutter runs to the position |
| Erase | Press UP and DOWN together until a brief jog |
Store and erase are the same press, so doing it with no position stored creates one.
How do I delete a remote or reset the motor?
| Goal | How | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Delete one remote | On that remote, hold PROG-TX and STOP until the motor makes a brief jog | Only that remote is removed |
| Full reset with a paired remote | Hold PROG-TX and STOP for at least 15 seconds: a brief jog, then another jog about 5 seconds later | Memory empty |
| Full reset with a new, unpaired remote | Switch the motor's power off and on, then within 8 seconds hold PROG-TX and STOP on any Gaposa remote until the motor jogs | Memory empty |
A reset clears every remote, channel and sensor paired to the motor, so pair your remotes again afterward. When you switch power for the second method, switch only this motor: any Gaposa motor powered up at the same moment can be reset too. More on resets is on How do I reset a Gaposa motor?
Can obstacle detection be turned off?
Gaposa gives a button sequence to switch obstacle sensitivity off and back on. It is the feature that stops the curtain on something in its way, so call (480) 921-0200 before changing it; Obstacle detection on rolling shutter motors covers what it does and does not protect against.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my motor is a Sense motor?
Read the model code on the motor label. Gaposa Sense motors with obstacle detection start XQ5E (wired) or XQ5EZ (radio), 10 to 50 Nm. Do not go by an EZ in the name or by a part name: the 80 to 120 Nm XQ6EZ motors have no obstacle detection.
Can a Sense motor have a manual override?
Gaposa's manual-override motors are a separate family, and none of them has obstacle detection. Adding an override to a shutter means giving up obstacle detection.
The motor stopped part-way and nothing is in the way. What should I do?
Check the curtain and guide rails, then run it again. If it went quiet after many runs, its thermal protection has tripped; wait about 15 minutes. If it keeps stopping, call (480) 921-0200 before changing any settings.
Do the limits survive a memory reset?
Gaposa's guide says the reset empties the transmitter memory (remotes, channels and sensors) and does not mention limits. Run a full cycle after any reset and set the limits again if either stop is wrong.
