Which Gaposa remote do I need for my rolling shutters?

Short answer

For one shutter, a single-channel handheld or on-wall Gaposa remote. For several, a 5-channel remote, which runs one shutter or all five at once, or the 16-channel with a screen and schedules. For staff or shared access, the code keypad or a key fob. For phone control, add a Wi-Fi bridge. One shutter can answer several remotes at once.

Key facts

  • Roll-A-Shield offers eight Gaposa remote styles: on-wall 1- and 5-channel, basic 1-channel, deluxe 1-channel, 5-channel and 16-channel handhelds, a digital keypad and a key fob. Roll-A-Shield data
  • A single-channel handheld comes standard with a Gaposa remote-controlled Roll-A-Shield shutter, and Gaposa is the default motor. Roll-A-Shield data
  • Gaposa remotes run on 434.15 MHz with a stated range of about 65 ft indoors and 600 ft outdoors; each channel can run one motor or a group of motors.
  • The 16-channel remote has a screen, up to 8 custom groups and hideable channels; the timer version adds open and close schedules.
  • The wireless code keypad is offered on Gaposa shutters only, not on Somfy. Roll-A-Shield data

Applies to: Gaposa radio (RTS) shutter motors, including manual-override and solar Gaposa motors, on rolling shutters including Roll-A-Shield's. Somfy motors take Somfy remotes; see the link below.

What Gaposa remotes are there?

Nine ways to control a Gaposa shutter: eight remote styles plus an app hub, all on the same radio system.

Remote Channels What it is for Battery
On-wall, single channel 1 Looks like a light switch (up, stop, down); fixed with screws or adhesive strips. One shutter CR2032
On-wall, 5-channel 5 Pick one of five shutters, or all at once; has Preset and All buttons CR2032
Basic handheld, single channel 1 The remote that comes standard with a Gaposa remote shutter CR2032
Deluxe handheld, single channel 1 Heavier feel, magnetic wall holder CR2032
Handheld, 5-channel 5 Several shutters from one remote CR2032
Handheld, 16-channel 16 Screen to pick the shutter, up to 8 custom groups, hidden channels; timer version sets schedules CR2450
Digital keypad Up and down, each with its own code Outside wall; enter a code, then up or down 2 x CR2032
Key fob 1 Small enough for a keychain CR2032
RollApp Wi-Fi hub up to 32 shutters Plugs into your router; phone app with rooms, presets and schedules Mains

Every Gaposa remote runs on 434.15 MHz, and Gaposa states a range of about 65 ft indoors and 600 ft outdoors. Each channel can run one motor or a group of motors.

Which one should I choose?

Start from how many shutters one person needs to run from one spot, then add remotes for the other people and places.

Situation Usual choice
One shutter, operated from inside the room Single-channel handheld or on-wall remote
Several shutters in one room or on one side of the house 5-channel on-wall or handheld; use All to move them together
Many shutters across the house, or timed opening and closing 16-channel with screen (timer version for schedules)
Staff who open and close a business Code keypad on an outside wall, or a key fob each
Closing a shutter from the car, or after walking out Key fob
Control from a phone or a voice assistant A Wi-Fi bridge; see phone and app control

You do not have to choose only one. Any shutter can be paired to several remotes at once, and the remotes can be mixed freely.

What does the 16-channel remote do that the others do not?

It shows the channel on a screen and adds groups and schedules.

  • 16 channels, each for one shutter or one group.
  • Up to 8 custom groups on top of the channels, so you can run, for example, every shutter on one side of the house together.
  • Unused channels can be hidden.
  • A magnetic wall bracket is included.
  • Timer functions are on the timer model (QCTZ16SY) only; the standard model (QCTZ16Y) has none.

It is also the one Gaposa remote that takes a CR2450 battery rather than a CR2032.

When does a keypad make sense?

When several people need to open a shutter without carrying a remote, typically staff opening and closing a business. Each person uses the code instead of a remote. The keypad mounts on an outside wall and is rated IP54.

Two placement rules from Gaposa: test it at the spot you plan to use before fixing it, and do not mount it on or near metal, which shields the radio signal. On Roll-A-Shield shutters the keypad is a Gaposa-only option. Pairing and code changes are on the Gaposa keypad page.

What about phone and app control?

You need a bridge between your Wi-Fi and the motor's radio, not a different remote. Gaposa's own hub runs up to 32 Gaposa shutters from a phone app with rooms, presets and up to 10 schedules, including sunrise and sunset timing. A Bond Bridge does the same job for Gaposa and Somfy radio motors alike, covering about 2,500 sq ft and up to 30 devices, and it is the bridge Roll-A-Shield usually supplies. Details are on the phone and app control page and the timers and schedules page.

Will a Gaposa remote work with my motor?

Only if the motor is a Gaposa radio motor. The remote follows the motor brand, so a Somfy motor needs a Somfy remote; see which Somfy remote you need. Gaposa's radio motors include its manual-override and solar models, and the solar motor works with any Gaposa remote. If you are not sure which motor you have, the brand name is on the remote and on the motor head. For any other make, see which remote works with my shutter motor.

How do I add the new remote?

From a remote that already works the shutter.

  1. On the working remote, select the shutter's channel, open the battery compartment, and hold the left inset button until the motor moves. Release it; the motor stops.
  2. Within 5 seconds, press UP on the new remote if the shutter moved up, or DOWN if it moved down.
  3. Test the new remote, and repeat for each shutter or channel, one at a time.

The full procedure, including what to do when no working remote is left, is on the add-a-Gaposa-remote page. Replacement remotes are in the online store, or call (480) 921-0200.

Frequently asked questions

Can one shutter have more than one remote?

Yes. Any Gaposa shutter can be paired to any mix of these remotes at the same time, for example a handheld, an on-wall remote, a key fob and a keypad, and one multi-channel remote can run several shutters.

Will a Gaposa remote work my Somfy motor?

No. The remote follows the motor brand: Gaposa motors take Gaposa remotes and Somfy motors take Somfy remotes. The two also use different radio frequencies, 434.15 MHz for Gaposa and 433.42 MHz for Somfy RTS.

How do I find out which channel a shutter is on?

Select one channel, press UP briefly and then STOP, and watch which shutter moves. Work through the channels one at a time; the channel lights, or the screen on the 16-channel, show which one is selected.

Can a Gaposa remote go on the wall?

Yes. Roll-A-Shield's install guide notes that Gaposa remotes work as either a handheld or a wall switch, with a wall plate and hardware in the package, and the deluxe handhelds come with a magnetic wall holder.
