What battery does my shutter remote take, and how do I change it?

Short answer

Most Gaposa shutter remotes take one CR2032 coin cell; the Gaposa 16-channel takes a CR2450 and the Gaposa keypad two CR2032s. Somfy's Smoove wall remotes take a CR2032 and the Telis 16 two AAA cells. Open the back, slide the old cell out, fit the new one positive side up, and test the remote.

Key facts

  • Gaposa's 1- and 5-channel handheld and on-wall remotes take one 3 V CR2032 cell, rated by Gaposa for about 2 years.
  • The Gaposa 16-channel remote takes one CR2450, and the Gaposa wireless keypad takes two CR2032 cells.
  • If the remote's lights do not come on when you press a button, the battery is the first suspect; Roll-A-Shield's battery-change videos end by testing the remote, with no re-pairing step. Roll-A-Shield data
  • Gaposa warns that a keypad's radio range can be 25 to 30% shorter when its batteries are low.
  • Gaposa remotes come standard on Roll-A-Shield remote shutters, a single-channel handheld unless you chose another style, and that standard remote takes a CR2032. Roll-A-Shield data

Applies to: Gaposa handheld, on-wall, 16-channel, key-fob and keypad remotes, and Somfy Telis, Smoove, Situo and Decorator RTS remotes, as supplied with rolling shutters including Roll-A-Shield's. SIMU's TSA+ is listed too.

Which battery does my remote take?

It depends on the brand and the model; the brand name is on the remote. Most Gaposa remotes take a CR2032.

Remote Battery
Gaposa 1-channel and 5-channel handhelds and on-wall remotes (Emitto line) 1 x CR2032, 3 V
Gaposa 16-channel with screen 1 x CR2450, 3 V
Gaposa key fob (QCTEZ1) 1 x CR2032
Gaposa wireless digital keypad 2 x CR2032
Gaposa QCTE 4-channel 1 x CR2430
Somfy Telis 16 RTS 2 x AAA (LR3); not rechargeable
Somfy Smoove 1 RTS II and Smoove 4 RTS II wall remotes 1 x CR2032
Somfy Situo 1 RTS 1 x CR2430
Somfy Situo 1 RTS II 1 x CR2032
Somfy Decorator RTS wall switch 1 x CR2430
SIMU TSA+ 4-channel 1 x CR2430

Not every model is listed. For other models, such as the Somfy Telis 1 and Telis 4 handhelds, a Somfy key fob, a DecoFlex switch or an older remote, open it and read the code printed on the old cell, and buy the same one.

Gaposa rates its remotes and keypad for about 2 years per battery.

How do I know the battery is the problem?

Press a button and watch the remote's light. If it does not come on, the battery is likely dead. On a keypad, weak batteries can show up first as poor range: Gaposa says its keypad can lose 25 to 30% of its range on low batteries.

If the light comes on but the shutter does not move, the battery is probably fine. Check the channel and the motor instead: see a remote that a new battery did not fix.

How do I open a Gaposa handheld remote?

Release it from its holder and the battery is on the back.

  1. Flip the remote over and press the clip on the back to release it from the holder.
  2. With a small screwdriver or similar tool, gently push the cell down so it slides out.
  3. Push the new cell up into place, positive side up.
  4. Slide the remote back into the holder until it clicks firmly, and test it.

How do I open a Gaposa on-wall remote?

The transmitter lifts out of a wall plate behind a decorative frame.

  1. Remove the decorative plate around the remote. That exposes the mounting plate holding the transmitter.
  2. Gently pry the transmitter up off the wall plate and lift it out.
  3. Turn it over. Push the old cell down and out with a small screwdriver.
  4. Push the new cell up into place, positive side up.
  5. Press the transmitter back onto the wall plate until it snaps in, and refit the decorative plate.

How do I open a Gaposa deluxe or 16-channel remote?

Take off the back cover.

  1. Remove the back cover to reach the battery holder.
  2. Push the old cell down and out. The space is tight, so take your time and do not bend the metal contacts.
  3. Push the new cell in, positive side up (the 16-channel takes a CR2450).
  4. Refit the cover until it clicks.

Tip: On the 16-channel, do not hold the round (circle) button while the battery goes back in. That combination factory-resets the remote itself: hidden channels reappear and custom groups are deleted.

How do I change the battery in a Gaposa keypad?

The keypad comes off its wall plate first.

  1. Lift the top black cover with a screwdriver.
  2. Unscrew the keypad body from the back plate.
  3. Turn and unlock the battery cover and replace both CR2032 cells.
  4. Lock the battery cover, screw the body back onto the plate, lift the clear LED cover with a screwdriver, and press the black cover back on by hand.

Do not press the RESET button on the back while it is open. Holding it for 5 seconds returns the keypad to its factory settings. Code problems are covered on the keypad troubleshooting page.

How do I change the battery in a Somfy remote?

On the Somfy handheld in Roll-A-Shield's video, one small screw holds the back on.

  1. Turn the remote upside down and remove the small screw.
  2. Separate the back plate to expose the battery.
  3. Remove the dead battery and fit the new one.
  4. Refit the back plate and the screw, and test the remote.

A Telis 16 takes two AAA cells, and Somfy says not to use rechargeables in it.

Do I need to re-pair the remote afterwards?

Normally not. Gaposa keeps the paired remotes and the limits in the motor's memory, and Roll-A-Shield's battery-change videos go straight from the swap to testing the remote, with no re-pairing step. If the remote still does nothing after a fresh battery, check that the cell is the right way up and that the right channel is selected on a multi-channel remote, then follow the new-battery-didn't-fix-it page.

Replacement remotes are in the online store; to choose one, see which Gaposa remote you need. For help, call (480) 921-0200.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to re-pair the remote after changing the battery?

Normally not. The pairing and the limits are stored in the motor, not the remote, and Roll-A-Shield's battery videos show no re-pairing step after the swap. One exception on the Gaposa 16-channel: holding its circle button while you put the battery back factory-resets the remote's own groups and hidden channels.

How long does a remote battery last?

Gaposa rates its remotes and keypad for about 2 years per battery, and SIMU says the same for its TSA+.

Can I use rechargeable batteries?

Not in a Telis 16, which Somfy says must not use rechargeable cells, or in a SIMU TSA+, which SIMU says not to recharge. Coin-cell remotes take the standard lithium cell listed for them.

I changed the battery and it still does not work. Now what?

Check the cell went in positive side up and that the right channel is selected on a multi-channel remote, then see the page on a remote that a new battery did not fix.
