Troubleshooting by symptom · Rolling Shutter Guide
Why isn’t my shutter keypad working, and what if I forgot the code?
Most keypad faults are the code, the batteries or the distance. A Gaposa keypad sends a command only after the right code, typed within 10 seconds; five rapid beeps mean it was refused. Forgot the code? Holding the RESET button on the back of the keypad for 5 seconds restores the factory codes: 11 for UP, 22 for DOWN.
Key facts
- A new or reset Gaposa keypad uses the factory codes 11 for UP and 22 for DOWN; Roll-A-Shield pairs it with 1, 1, UP while the motor is in pairing mode. Roll-A-Shield data
- The keypad runs on two 3 V CR2032 coin batteries, which Gaposa rates for about 2 years.
- Gaposa rates the keypad's range at 65 ft indoors and 650 ft outdoors, and warns it can drop by 25 to 30% when the batteries are low.
- Gaposa's keypad works only with Gaposa motors and controls, and Gaposa says it is not an intrusion-prevention device.
Applies to: Gaposa wireless wall-mounted digital keypads (QCTRKP and QCTKP) on Gaposa radio motors, the keypad Roll-A-Shield supplies. Somfy and SIMU keypads use different procedures.
A wireless shutter keypad is a remote control with a code lock. It talks to the motor by radio, so when it stops working the cause is almost always one of four things: the code, the batteries, the distance to the motor, or a pairing that was lost. The keypad's beeps tell you which.
What do the beeps mean?
The beep tells you whether the keypad accepted your code. This is Gaposa's own list.
| Sound | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Short beep | A number key was pressed |
| Long beep after UP or DOWN | The code was right and the command was sent |
| Long beep while changing codes | The new code was accepted |
| Long beep after holding RESET | The keypad is back to factory codes |
| Five rapid beeps | Wrong code, or a step in a code change |
Symptom, likely cause, what to do
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No beep and no light | Dead batteries | Replace both CR2032 batteries. |
| Five rapid beeps | Wrong code; the whole code must be typed within 10 seconds | Press UP or DOWN to cancel, then type the code again without pausing. |
| Long beep, shutter does not move | The command was sent but not received | Move closer and try again; if the handheld remote still works, re-pair the keypad. |
| Works only when standing close | Low batteries, or the keypad is on or near metal | Replace the batteries; move the keypad off metal. |
| Code forgotten | A code cannot be changed without the current one | Reset the keypad to factory codes. |
| Shutter moves without any code | Codes were saved blank | Set a code for each button. |
| Keypad and handheld remote both fail | The problem is at the motor, not the keypad | See Why won't my rolling shutter go up or down? |
How do I reset the keypad if I forgot the code?
Take the keypad off its back plate and hold the RESET button on the back for 5 seconds. Changing a code needs the current code, so without it a reset is the way back in.
Tools: a small flat screwdriver and a screwdriver for the screws that hold the keypad body to its back plate.
- Lift the black top cover off with a small screwdriver.
- Unscrew the keypad body from the back plate.
- On the back of the body, press and hold RESET for 5 seconds, until you hear a long beep.
- Screw the body back onto the back plate.
- Lift the clear LED cover with the screwdriver so the black cover can seat, then press the black cover back on by hand.
- Test with the factory code: type 1, 1, then UP.
- Change both codes, as below, so the factory codes stop working.
If the factory code beeps but the shutter does not move, pair the keypad to the motor again.
How do I pair the keypad to the shutter again?
You need a handheld remote that already runs the shutter.
- On a multi-channel remote, select this shutter's channel and run it briefly to confirm it is the right one.
- On the back of the remote, hold the left button (the programming or SYNC button) until the motor starts to move.
- While it moves, type the keypad's UP code and press UP; on a reset keypad that is 1, 1, UP.
- Stop the shutter with the remote.
- Test DOWN with the DOWN code; on a reset keypad that is 2, 2, DOWN.
Gaposa's manual describes the same pairing using whichever direction the motor moves in step 2. The remote programming buttons and their covers vary by remote; see adding a Gaposa remote.
How do I change the code?
You need the current code; without it, reset first. Change UP and DOWN separately.
- Hold the 0 key, press and release UP, then release 0.
- Type the current UP code (11 on a reset keypad) and press UP.
- Type your new code and press UP.
- Type the new code again and press UP. A long beep confirms it.
- Repeat with 0 and DOWN for the DOWN code (22 on a reset keypad).
Codes can be 1 to 9 digits. Change them when the factory codes are still set, and whenever someone who knew the code no longer should, such as an employee who has left.
Tip: Gaposa states that its keypad is not an intrusion-prevention device. It controls access to the shutter; it is not an alarm.
Why does the keypad only work up close?
Range falls as the batteries weaken, and metal blocks the signal. Gaposa rates the keypad at 65 ft indoors and 650 ft outdoors, warns that range can drop by 25 to 30% on low batteries, and says not to mount it on or close to metal structures. Gaposa also recommends testing the range before fixing the back plate to the wall.
To change the batteries, take the body off the back plate as for a reset, turn and unlock the battery cover, fit two new CR2032 3 V cells, and lock the cover again. Gaposa rates a set at about 2 years.
What if the remote doesn't work either?
Then the keypad is fine and the shutter is not responding to anything. A motor that has run up and down many times may have tripped its thermal protection and will recover in about 15 minutes; otherwise check power and work through the stuck-shutter guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can the UP and DOWN codes be the same?
Yes. Each button has its own code, but you can set both to the same number; then you type the code once and press either button.
Anyone can press UP or DOWN and the shutter moves without a code. Why?
The codes were set blank. Gaposa notes that if a code is saved without typing any digits, the button works on its own. Set a real code for each button.
Will a Gaposa keypad work with a Somfy motor?
No. Gaposa says its keypad works only with Gaposa motors and controls. For a Somfy motor, ask for a Somfy-compatible control.
How long can a code be?
From 1 to 9 digits, chosen by you.
