Which remote works with my rolling shutter motor?

Which remote works with my rolling shutter motor?

Short answer

A remote has to match the motor's brand and radio system. Gaposa radio motors take Gaposa remotes (434.15 MHz on current models); Somfy RTS motors (433.42 MHz) take Somfy RTS remotes. A wall-switch motor has no receiver, and OZRoll battery shutters run from their E-Port controller. The brand is printed on the old remote and on the motor head.

Key facts

  • Gaposa's current remotes and radio motors work on 434.15 MHz and Somfy RTS motors on 433.42 MHz, and neither brand's remote is used to run the other's motor.
  • Gaposa is Roll-A-Shield's default motor, so a remote-controlled Roll-A-Shield shutter is usually a Gaposa; Somfy is the optional alternative. Roll-A-Shield data
  • Gaposa rates its remotes at about 65 ft indoors and 600 ft in open air.
  • One Bond Bridge covers about 2,500 sq ft and runs Gaposa and Somfy radio motors from a phone app or voice assistant, but not OZRoll battery motors. Roll-A-Shield data
  • Pairing a replacement remote when no working remote is left usually needs only a power cut to that one motor, not a trip into the shutter box.

Applies to: Motorized rolling shutters with Gaposa or Somfy RTS radio motors (wired, override and Gaposa solar), wall-switch motors, and OZRoll battery shutters.

How do I tell which motor brand I have?

Read the old remote or wall control first. The motor brand, Gaposa or Somfy on Roll-A-Shield shutters, is printed on the remote and on the motor head inside the box, so the remote is the first place to look. If the remote is lost, these clues help:

What you have Motor type Which remote
A Gaposa remote, keypad or key fob Gaposa radio motor A current Gaposa remote
A Somfy Telis, Situo or Smoove remote Somfy RTS radio motor A Somfy RTS remote
A rocker switch on the wall and no remote ever Wired (switch) motor None as built; ask about converting it
A wall plate with a removable controller and a charger OZRoll battery motor None; it runs from the E-Port controller
A slim solar panel at the top of the shutter Gaposa solar motor Any Gaposa remote
No marks you can read Unknown Send a photo before buying

On a shutter Roll-A-Shield built, the odds favour Gaposa: it is the default motor, with Somfy as the option.

Why won't a Gaposa remote run a Somfy motor?

Because the two brands talk on different radio systems. Gaposa's current remotes and radio motors use 434.15 MHz; Somfy RTS motors use 433.42 MHz. Roll-A-Shield treats the brands as never interchangeable: the remote always follows the motor. Buy a remote made for your motor's brand.

The one way to put both brands under a single control is a bridge. The Bond Bridge works with Gaposa and Somfy radio motors alike and runs them from a phone app or a voice assistant; one unit covers about 2,500 sq ft. It does not work with OZRoll battery motors. See phone and app control.

Which remotes work with a Gaposa motor?

Any of Gaposa's current remotes, and they mix and match: one shutter can answer several remotes, and one remote can run several shutters. The range covers:

  • On-wall remotes that look like a light switch, in 1- and 5-channel versions.
  • Basic handheld remotes, single or multi-channel; the single-channel one comes with a Gaposa remote shutter.
  • Deluxe handhelds in 1, 5 and 16 channels; the 16-channel has a screen and can open and close shutters on a schedule.
  • A wall keypad that opens the shutter with a code, and a key fob.
  • The RollApp Wi-Fi hub, which runs up to 32 Gaposa shutters from a phone app.

Gaposa rates its remotes at about 65 ft indoors and 600 ft in open air. The online store sells Gaposa 1-, 5- and 16-channel handhelds, the 5-channel wall remote, the wireless keypad and the RollApp hub. Choosing between them is covered on which Gaposa remote do I need.

Which remotes work with a Somfy motor?

A Somfy RTS remote. The line-up Roll-A-Shield fits is a 1-channel and a 4-channel handheld, a 16-channel handheld with a screen and schedules, a single-channel on-wall remote, a key fob, and the TaHoma Wi-Fi hub for up to 32 shutters. Somfy rates its Smoove RTS II wall remotes at 50 m. Somfy remotes are ordered by phone; see which Somfy remote do I need.

My shutter runs from a wall switch. Can I add a remote?

Not as it is: a switch-operated motor has no radio receiver, so no remote will pair with it. Gaposa makes a separate radio receiver that is wired in between the power supply and a switch motor so it answers Gaposa remotes; whether that suits a given shutter is a question to put to Roll-A-Shield before buying anything. Fitting one is mains electrical work for a licensed electrician; the options are on turning a switch-operated shutter into a remote-controlled one.

What about solar and battery shutters?

A Gaposa solar motor has a 434 MHz radio built in and takes the same Gaposa remotes as a wired Gaposa motor. An OZRoll battery shutter is different: Roll-A-Shield's OZRoll shutters have no radio receiver and are run from the E-Port controller on the wall, so a remote is not an option. See legacy battery shutters.

How do I pair the new remote?

On both brands, pairing is stored in the motor, not in the remote, so a new remote does nothing until it is paired. If another remote still works, copy from it. If none does, Gaposa and Somfy RTS motors both accept a new remote after you cut and restore the power to that one motor and press the right buttons on the new remote; neither needs the motor-head button. On a Gaposa motor this route also erases the remotes already paired. Follow the brand pages exactly: Gaposa or Somfy.

Frequently asked questions

Can one remote run several shutters?

Yes. Multi-channel remotes run several shutters, one at a time or all together: Gaposa makes 5- and 16-channel remotes and Somfy 4- and 16-channel ones, and one shutter can also be paired to several remotes at once.

Do I have to open the shutter box to pair a new remote?

Usually not. On a Gaposa radio motor or a Somfy RTS motor, cutting the power to that one motor and then pressing the right buttons on the new remote does it; the steps are on the Gaposa and Somfy pages. The exception is a Gaposa solar motor, where the power cut means unplugging the panel connector.

My remote's light comes on but the shutter does nothing. Is it the wrong remote?

Probably not, if it is the remote that came with the shutter. When the remote lights up but the shutter does not move, check the power to the motor first, then wait about 15 minutes in case the motor's thermal cutout has tripped, then try re-pairing; if it is still dead the motor may have a fault. See remote stopped working.
