Can I still get a battery, charger or controller for an OZRoll, E-Port or BOS battery shutter?

Can I still get a battery, charger or controller for an OZRoll, E-Port or BOS battery shutter?

Short answer

For OZRoll E-Series shutters with an E-Port wall plate, usually yes: the battery is inside the removable E-Port controller, and Roll-A-Shield's store carries an OZRoll battery and charger. Other OZRoll parts depend on what is on hand, as there is no US distributor. The older BOS battery switchboard is no longer made, so a failed BOS usually means converting.

Key facts

  • The E-Port controller only works when it is seated in its wall plate, and it recharges there from an AC/DC adapter plugged into the DC port at the base of the plate. Roll-A-Shield data
  • The controller's battery is not designed to sit on the charger all the time: keep it seated, and recharge it on a cycle. Roll-A-Shield data
  • OZRoll rates the E-Port controller pack at 14.8 V and 1,600 mAh (lithium-ion), and a full charge takes about 8 hours.
  • In Roll-A-Shield's sizing data the OZRoll battery motors come in 10, 20 and 35 Nm, lifting about 30, 70 and 115 lb of curtain on a 60 mm tube. Roll-A-Shield data
  • The BOS battery-operated switchboard is an older system that is no longer manufactured; when it fails, the owner may need to convert to a new battery or solar system. Roll-A-Shield data

Applies to: OZRoll E-Series battery shutters with an E-Port wall plate and removable controller, and older BOS battery-switchboard shutters. Gaposa solar shutters are a different system.

Which battery system do I have?

Look at the control on the inside wall next to the shutter.

What you see What it is
A wall plate with an up, stop and down controller that lifts out, and a small charger plugged into the bottom of the plate OZRoll E-Series shutter with an E-Port wall plate and controller
An older battery-operated switchboard BOS, no longer manufactured
A slim solar panel at the top of the shutter A solar motor, not a battery shutter: see how solar shutters work
A switch that looks like a light switch, no charger A wired motor on mains power

OZRoll is an Australian maker of battery tubular motors. Its T-series tubular motors run on 12 V, powered from the E-Port controller rather than from household power. Roll-A-Shield fits them where wiring is hard and a solar panel would not get enough sun, and they suit smaller, lighter shutters. A low "pancake" version, the T10, goes where the box has very little headroom.

Can I still get a battery, charger or controller?

For E-Port systems, usually. The battery is inside the removable E-Port controller: OZRoll rates the pack at 14.8 V and 1,600 mAh, lithium-ion. Roll-A-Shield's online store carries an OZRoll battery and charger; the store's battery (OZRoll part 15.600.001) is the non-RF E-Port controller pack.

Other OZRoll parts are a different story. OZRoll does not ship to the US and has no US distributor, so motors, drive parts and adapters can only come from parts already on hand, and repairs are decided case by case. Send a photo of the wall plate and, if you can see it, the label on the motor before ordering anything other than the controller or charger.

Why does my E-Port controller keep running flat?

Usually because of how it is charged. Work through these in order:

  1. Make sure the controller is pushed fully into its wall plate. It only works, and only charges, when it is seated.
  2. Check the charger is plugged into a live outlet and into the DC port at the base of the wall plate.
  3. Give it a full charge. OZRoll puts a full charge at about 8 hours.
  4. Then charge on a cycle rather than leaving it on the charger permanently; the battery is not designed for that.

If a fully charged, properly seated controller still will not run the shutter, call before buying parts. The full fault list is on battery shutter keeps dying.

My battery shutter stops in the wrong place

OZRoll motors stop at limits that are set at the factory; in rare cases they drift or reset themselves in shipping. The first test of the shutter's travel takes two people: one inside at the controller, one outside watching with the box cover off.

  • Going up, the shutter should stop with the bottom slat still inside the guide rails. If it looks like it will run too far, press stop at once.
  • Going down, it should stop when the whole curtain is off the axle and the hanging straps have pushed the top slat toward the box. If the curtain starts winding back up the wrong way round the axle, press stop at once.

Both cases mean the limit needs resetting. Roll-A-Shield's install manual points to a video for the adjustment; call (480) 921-0200 if you do not have it.

What are the options when a battery shutter cannot be repaired?

There are three, and which one fits is decided case by case, so call before choosing:

  • Keep the OZRoll system with a new controller or charger, or a repair from parts on hand.
  • Convert to a new battery or solar system. This is the usual answer when a BOS switchboard fails, because the BOS is no longer made. Roll-A-Shield also converts OZRoll shutters.
  • Replace the shutter if the curtain and box are in poor condition. Roll-A-Shield asks for a photo first, and a unit in poor condition may need a sales visit rather than a service call.

The motor types are compared on wired, radio, override, solar or battery.

Frequently asked questions

Does a battery shutter still work in a power outage?

Yes. A battery motor runs on its own stored charge, so it keeps working when the power is out, as long as the controller is charged. That is also why battery and solar motors have no hand-crank override.

Can I control an OZRoll shutter from my phone or a Bond Bridge?

No. Roll-A-Shield's OZRoll shutters have no radio receiver, and the Bond Bridge does not work with OZRoll battery motors. They are run from the E-Port controller.

The controller is dead and the shutter is closed. What can I do?

Seat the controller in its wall plate with the charger connected and give it a full charge before trying again. If it still does nothing, call (480) 921-0200 before trying any other way of powering the motor.
