Metro Phoenix Rolling Shutters and Screens
Rolling shutters and screens built to last in Metro Phoenix
Roll-A-Shield is the Valley’s longest-established rolling shutter manufacturer. We build every shutter in Tempe for desert sun, heat, and monsoon dust, custom-measure every rolling screen for its opening, and install both with our own crews.
Longevity Basics
What makes them last
Rolling shutter durability and rolling screen lifespan come down to four things: what each one is made of, how it is built and installed, the conditions it faces, and the care it gets. Start with our rolling shutters or rolling screens.
Local. Experienced. Trusted.
Proudly manufacturing in Phoenix, AZ since 1979. Thousands of homeowners and businesses across Metro Phoenix trust Roll-A-Shield to protect what matters most.
Shutters and Screens
Two ways to protect openings
Both products serve homes and businesses across Metro Phoenix. A rolling shutter closes an opening behind a solid barrier, and a rolling screen shades it. Start with the product that fits the opening you need to cover.

Rolling shutters
Aluminum window shutters and security shutters for doors, patios, and storefronts. Closed, each one forms a solid barrier over the opening it protects.

Rolling screens
Retractable patio screens and motorized screens that shade a patio or outdoor dining area, then roll out of sight. Built for this climate, they keep the space usable for more of the year.
Built for the Valley
Made for desert conditions
Valley sun, heat, dust, and monsoon storms are hard on anything mounted outside a home or business. Here is the feature that answers each condition, and which product it belongs to.
Finishes That Hold Up
Finishes made for sun
Shutter slats and guide rails carry a baked-on powder-coated finish, applied to resist fading, rust, and corrosion. Screens pair six fabric colors with six powder-coated frame colors, so the shade fits your house.

On-screen colors are close approximations. Your specialist can show you physical samples and confirm the exact finish for your home or building during your free on-site estimate.
What They’re Made Of
Built from the inside out
Longevity starts with what each part is made of. Here are the slats, rails, and housing of a rolling shutter, and the fabric, tracks, and housing of a rolling screen.

Shutter slats
Aluminum, foam-filled or extruded
Insulated slats are roll-formed aluminum injected with foam. Extruded slats are formed from a single solid layer of aluminum.
- Foam layer between two aluminum walls
- Single-wall extruded option
- Interlocking slats coil above the opening

Rails, bottom bar, and hood
What holds the curtain
Slats run in guide rails on both sides, a sealed bottom bar locks the shutter closed, and the curtain coils inside a slim aluminum housing above the opening.
- Reinforced guide rails
- End retention on extruded slats
- Weather seal on the extruded bottom slat

Screen fabric
Woven performance mesh
Rolling screen fabric is a woven textile stored on a roll. Depending on the fabric, the same screen works for sun control or privacy, with a solid blackout option.
- UV-blocking sun-control mesh
- Blackout fabric for privacy
- Clear vinyl panels on select fabrics

Housing, tracks, and bar
What holds the mesh
The screen lives in a slim housing above the opening and runs in side tracks. Zip retention holds the mesh taut, and a weighted bottom bar rides down to the threshold.
- Powder-coated aluminum housing
- Zip side-retention tracks
- Face-mounted or recessed in a soffit
Why Roll-A-Shield
Six reasons ours last
How long a product holds up also depends on the company behind it: who makes it, measures it, and installs it, who supplies the parts later, and how long that company has been doing the work.

Made in the Valley
Every rolling shutter we sell is manufactured at our Tempe, Arizona facility, so it is built in the Valley for Valley homes and businesses.

Custom built to fit
Every shutter is measured to your exact opening and made to those dimensions, not trimmed from a stock size. Every rolling screen is custom-measured for its opening.

Our own installers
Every Metro Phoenix shutter is installed by our own crews rather than subcontractors, and the same is true of every rolling screen we sell.

Parts from the source
Shutter slats, guide rails, and hardware are cut and fabricated in house at our Tempe facility, so replacement parts come from the people who made yours.

Made for busy patios
Restaurants, bars, and hotels use commercial rolling screens to extend the patio season, and most run them motorized, so staff can lower a whole patio from a wall switch or on a schedule.

Here since 1979

Motors and Controls
Motors made for daily use
Motorized rolling shutters and motorized patio screens run on a tubular motor inside the roller. Here is how each one protects the slats or fabric, keeps working in an outage, and responds to your controls.
A motor inside the roller
Both products run on a tubular motor inside the roller. On shutters, soft start and soft stop ease the curtain into motion and reduce wear over time.

Obstacle detection
Rolling screen motors include obstacle detection, so the screen stops if something is in its path instead of closing onto it. Shutters offer it on select systems.

Manual override
Wired shutter and screen motors can include a hand-crank manual override for power outages. Solar and battery motors run on their own stored charge instead.

Controls for each product
Shutters: remotes, wall and key switches, key fobs, keypads, and schedules. Screens: a remote, wall switch, phone app, schedules, voice control, and a sun sensor.

What Our Customers Say
Trusted across Metro Phoenix
“Absolutely first class business in every respect. Highly recommend the team there. Never had a disappointment in 15+ years as a customer.”
David G.
“Roll-A-Shield did a great job, from start to finish. A sales rep gave me a quote for two shades. I ended up only going with one, but was not pressured, at all, to also get the other shade. Pricing was fair, and they delivered exactly what I asked for in the exact date they said they would complete the job. Pleasure to work with everyone I came in contact with.”
Ralph C.
“We updated our roller shields. We had the first set over 35 years and have updated the windows and wanted the new roller shields also. Very happy with the new look. We feel much safer in our home with them and it really helps with the electric bills.”

Common Questions
Your questions, answered.
Answers to what Metro Phoenix homeowners and businesses ask us most about rolling shutter durability, rolling screen lifespan, fading, and the simple maintenance that keeps both running smoothly.
01What is the life expectancy of an aluminum rolling shutter?
Our Metro Phoenix warranty page puts it plainly: our shutters are “built to last 20 or more years.” That is an expected lifespan, not a warranty term, and the same page notes that the warranty “is separate from the shutter’s expected lifespan.” Aluminum shutter lifespan comes down to the slat, the finish, the fit, and the care: powder-coated aluminum slats, a shutter built to its measured opening, regular washing, and a technician when a part wears.
02Are aluminum rolling shutters durable?
Yes, and the material is the reason. Our rolling security shutters page says Roll-A-Shield security shutters are “crafted from robust extruded aluminum, selected for its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and durability.” Interlocking slats run in guide rails on both sides and coil into a housing above the opening when they are not in use. On storefronts and service counters, our commercial page notes that roll-down security doors are “specifically engineered for frequent daily operation in commercial environments.”
03Do roller shutters rust?
Our aluminum roller shutters are built to resist it. As our rolling security shutters page puts it, “Aluminum construction resists corrosion,” and our warranty page says the extruded slats carry “a baked on, powder coated finish” that resists “fading, rust, and corrosion.” That powder coat is the protective finish on the aluminum itself, not a treatment added after installation, so keep it intact: painted shutter slats void the shutter warranty.
04Do rolling shutters fade in the sun?
The finish is chosen for exactly that exposure. Every slat is powder-coated, and our slats page notes that “Powder coat is what holds up under sustained Arizona UV, and lighter finishes reflect more heat than darker ones.” Your part is gentle cleaning: mild soap and water, and no power washers or harsh household cleaners, which can damage the finish. On-screen colors are close approximations, so your specialist brings physical samples to the estimate.
05Do rolling shutters last in hot weather?
Valley heat is what they are built for. Our monsoon page says our shutters are built with durable aluminum construction, secure side rails, and reliable locking systems “specifically suited to the expansion, contraction, and UV exposure that Arizona’s climate demands year-round.” On insulated profiles, foam-filled slats add an insulating air pocket between the shutter and the window. Heat changes one care rule: do not wash a shutter during extreme hot weather. And when a summer storm is coming, close them, because “closing your shutters in advance is safer and easier than trying to do so once winds pick up.”
06Do roller shutters need maintenance?
A little, and it is simple. Routine roller shutter maintenance is to close the shutter and hose it down at least twice a year, with a mild soap on stubborn dirt, wiping up and down so the slats stay aligned, then brushing the guide rails gently. Skip power washers and harsh household cleaners. The box above the opening, the motor, and the wiring are technician work. For rolling shutter maintenance beyond the basics, we recommend a professional visit every other year; our rolling shutter cleaning service includes a maintenance inspection to identify any potential repairs. It matters for coverage too: failure to provide necessary maintenance is one of the things that voids the shutter warranty.
07When should roller shutters be replaced?
Usually later than people expect, because most problems come down to one part. As our repair page puts it, repair “usually makes sense when one part has failed and the rest of the shutter is sound, such as a motor, a remote, a strap, or a few slats,” while replacement “is worth comparing when damage runs across the curtain, guide rails, and box together, or when you want an operator your current shutter cannot take.” Signs worth a service call include a shutter stuck partway, grinding or new noises, no response to the remote, running crooked in the guide rails, or bent and dented slats. A local technician confirms the cause before anything is replaced.
08What does rolling shutter replacement involve?
Often less than a whole new shutter. For Roll-A-Shield shutters, slats, bottom rails, U-channels, guide rails, and hanging straps can be ordered as parts for an existing shutter, and the full curtain can be replaced as a unit. Slats, guide rails, and hardware are cut and fabricated in-house at our Tempe facility. Replacement parts are made for Roll-A-Shield shutters, so parts for other systems are not always available, and our team may ask for photos first. If a new shutter is the better answer, financing on approved credit is available for homeowners.
09What is the lifespan of a rolling screen?
It depends on how the screen is used, so we do not quote a single number. As our motorized and manual screens page puts it, “We do not publish a single lifespan figure, because it depends on the opening, the exposure, and how often the screen runs.” The same page adds: “Kept clean and retracted in high wind, a screen lasts well in the Arizona sun.” When something does wear, the motor is a tubular unit that can be swapped out, and the mesh, tracks, and parts can be serviced or replaced without redoing the whole screen.
10Does screen fabric fade?
Arizona sun is hard on any fabric, which is why fading carries our longest coverage term. Our warranty page says “Fabric and mesh are covered for 10 years against fading, our longest coverage term on either product line, because Arizona sun is hardest on fabric.” Care helps too: rinse rather than scrub, and avoid pressure washers and harsh household cleaners, “both of which can damage the weave and the coating that makes the fabric perform.”
11What does retractable screen maintenance involve?
Very little. Hose the mesh down with clear water about once a month; the fabric can be cleaned in place on the frame. For a deeper clean, brush off loose dirt, then wash with water and a mild natural soap, not a laundry or dish detergent, using a soft-bristle brush, and rinse and air dry. A thorough deep clean is typically needed every two to three years. Keep the side tracks clear of grit, let the mesh dry before rolling it up, and retract the screen ahead of high wind. The motor itself needs no routine service, and anything involving the tensioned tracks or electrical parts is a job for our technicians.
12What is sun-control mesh?
It is the screen fabric chosen to stop heat at the opening. Our screens page describes sun-control screens as screens “that stop heat before it reaches the glass or the patio,” and our performance mesh is “rated by the manufacturer to block up to 95% of heat and UV,” which is the fabric maker’s rating rather than a figure we measure ourselves. Openness is how much of the weave is holes, and color changes the view: darker tones like Black and Charcoal give the crispest see-through visibility and the best glare control. We bring physical samples to your estimate so you can look through them at your own opening.
13How do motorized patio screens work?
A tubular motor inside the roller winds the mesh up or down, and the side tracks keep it flat and taut. Every motorized screen includes a remote, and motorized retractable screens can add a wall switch, phone control, and schedules. The motors we install include obstacle detection, so the screen stops if something is in its path. Power is hardwired or solar: hardwired motors need professional wiring, while the solar option is a self-contained panel, battery, and motor. The motor itself needs no routine service, and every motor we install carries a 5 year warranty.
14Are custom rolling screens available for homes and businesses?
Yes. Every rolling screen is custom-measured for the exact opening it covers. As our screens page explains, residential rolling screens “are about comfort, so the focus is sun and heat control, insects, and privacy for windows, sliding glass doors, and outdoor living areas,” while commercial rolling screens “are about revenue and operations: extending the usable patio season for restaurants, bars, and hotels, shading storefronts, offices, and classrooms, and covering wide multi-bay spans with group motor control.” The same local crew installs both.
15Are retractable patio, window, and porch screens the same as outdoor shades?
Mostly, yes. As our sun and shade page puts it, “Rolling screen, patio shade, retractable screen, and roller shade all describe the same system: a fabric roll in a housing, side tracks, and a motor or a crank.” The opening is what changes. Retractable window screens handle a single window or slider, retractable screens for a patio can enclose the entire covered space, and the same system scales to retractable porch screens. The fabric choice then sets the job: sun control, insects, or privacy.
16How much do rolling shutters cost in Phoenix?
There is no one-size price, because every shutter is built to its opening. Size is the single biggest driver, since wider and taller openings use more material and call for heavier operators. The slat profile, manual or motorized operation, the controls you add, and access and mounting at the opening all move the number too. For rolling screens, the fabric and a solar or hardwired motor shift the price. Your exact price comes from a free on-site estimate; for ranges, read our rolling shutter cost guide and rolling screen cost guide.
17What should I look for in the best rolling shutters?
Ask the same four questions of any exterior shutters you are considering: what the slats are made of and how they are finished, whether the shutter is built to your measured opening, who installs it, and who services it afterward. Here is how ours answer. Our window shutters and security shutters use powder-coated aluminum slats, either foam-filled insulated profiles or single-layer extruded ones. Every shutter is measured to your exact opening and made to those dimensions, not trimmed from a stock size. Every Metro Phoenix shutter is installed by our own crews, and the same local team handles service after the sale.
18What warranty comes with rolling shutters and rolling screens?
Each product carries its own limited warranty, both running from your date of installation. Rolling shutters: “1 year on labor, 5 years on shutter parts, 5 years on motors, 2 years on electronic components, and 1 year on 15mm strap manual shutters.” Rolling screens: “1 year on labor, 10 years on fabric against fading, 5 years on motors, 5 years on extrusions and parts, and 2 years on electronic components.” Painted shutter slats void the shutter warranty, and wind damage is not covered under any rolling screen warranty. Read the full warranty terms.
19Does professional installation affect how long they last?
Yes, and the warranty reflects it. Our shutter warranty is voided if the shutter is installed or repaired by anyone other than an authorized Roll-A-Shield agent, or installed against Roll-A-Shield’s installation instructions. Every Metro Phoenix shutter is installed by our own crews rather than subcontractors. Screens work the same way. As our screens page puts it, “we install them for you; these are not a DIY kit,” and our own crew mounts the housing, anchors the side tracks, sets the motor, and tests every screen before leaving.
