Metro Phoenix Restaurant and Bar Patio Screens
Motorized patio screens for Valley restaurants and bars
Motorized screens lower over the open sides of your restaurant, bar, or brewery patio for shade and a more comfortable table, then retract out of sight. One local team from our Tempe facility measures, configures, and installs every screen.
Patio Screen Basics
Shade that rolls away
Rolling screens, also called motorized retractable screens, are mesh panels that lower from a slim housing above the opening, run in side tracks on both edges, and roll back up when you want the patio open.
Local. Experienced. Trusted.
Proudly serving Metro Phoenix since 1979. Thousands of homeowners and businesses across Metro Phoenix trust Roll-A-Shield to protect what matters most.
Two Ways to Screen a Patio
Screens for every service
Commercial rolling screens work differently on a lunch patio and a late-night bar deck, from the hours they come down to the openings they shade. Start with the one that sounds most like your patio.

Restaurant patios
Dining patios, sidewalk seating, and covered courtyards, where the screens follow the lunch and afternoon service and come up for the dinner crowd.

Bars, breweries, and rooftops
Bar patios, beer gardens, and rooftop decks, where the screens work the late afternoon crowd at the rail and come up when the sun drops.
Patio by Patio
Built around your patio
Every restaurant patio enclosure starts with its openings. Your specialist walks each one, checks what the housing can mount to, and plans the retractable patio screens around the way your staff and guests use the space.
Finishes
Colors that suit your patio
Retractable screens come in six fabric colors of UV-blocking performance mesh and six powder-coated frame and housing colors, so the screens can match the building instead of fighting it. Compare them below, then see samples on site.
Fabric colors
UV-blocking performance mesh · 6 options
Darker tones like Black and Charcoal give the crispest see-through visibility and the best glare control. A dark mesh absorbs light rather than scattering it, so your eye reads through the weave instead of at it. Lighter earth tones like Tumbleweed and Tobacco blend into desert and Southwest exteriors and trade away some of that see-through crispness in return.
Frame and housing colors
Powder-coated aluminum · 6 options
Frame and housing color is a separate choice from fabric. Matched to the stucco, fascia, or trim, the housing disappears into the architecture when the screen is retracted.
On-screen colors are close approximations. Your specialist can bring physical samples and confirm the exact fabric and frame for your patio during your free on-site estimate.
Why Screen a Patio
Six reasons to screen your patio
A screen earns its place every service, not only on the hottest days. Lower it when the patio needs it, raise it when it does not, and your guests get a more comfortable table either way.

Shade on every table
Lower the screen and the sun and glare land on the mesh instead of your guests, while the view and the breeze still come through.

A cooler-feeling patio
Shade over the seating takes the edge off a Valley afternoon, so the patio is easier to sit through for your guests and your staff.

Fewer bugs at the table
With insect mesh lowered, mosquitoes, flies, and gnats stay on the outside of the screen, and your guests keep the air and the view.

A calmer view from the table
Screen the street, the parking lot, or the wall next door, and give seated guests a break from what sits beside the patio.

Open when you want the view
The screen retracts fully into its housing above the opening, so the patio looks and feels the way it did before.

Sized to your openings
Every screen is custom-fit to the measured opening, whether you are screening one side of the patio or a full run of bays.
Payment options for your project
Commercial projects get a free on-site quote and a detailed proposal, and our team can walk through payment arrangements with you during quoting.
Operation & Control
Run the patio from one remote
Every one of our motorized retractable screens comes with a handheld remote. Add wall switches and phone control, and the patio can follow the rhythm of your service with less for your staff to remember.

Remote and wall switch
Raise or lower one screen or a whole group from a handheld remote, or wire a wall switch by the door so any of your staff can run the patio.

Phone, schedules, and voice
A Bond Bridge hub links your screens to your phone. Set schedules that drop them for the hottest part of the afternoon, or use Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
How You Run Them
Remote, solar, or switch
Both systems can be motorized. Here is how you run an opening day to day and keep it working when the power drops.

Run a single opening from a handheld remote, or wire it to a wall switch that stays put.

Motorized patio screens can use solar-powered motors, so no new wiring runs to the patio.

Integrate with common smart-home systems to run openings on a schedule or by voice.
Know Your Options
Screens versus the alternatives
Umbrellas, shade sails, fixed screens, and vinyl curtains all have a place on a patio. Here is how retractable patio screens work differently from each, so you can weigh them for your openings.

What Our Customers Say
Trusted across Metro Phoenix
“Absolutely first class business in every respect. Highly recommend the team there. Never had a disappointment in 15+ years as a customer.”
David G.
“Roll-A-Shield did a great job, from start to finish. A sales rep gave me a quote for two shades. I ended up only going with one, but was not pressured, at all, to also get the other shade. Pricing was fair, and they delivered exactly what I asked for in the exact date they said they would complete the job. Pleasure to work with everyone I came in contact with.”
Ralph C.
“We updated our roller shields. We had the first set over 35 years and have updated the windows and wanted the new roller shields also. Very happy with the new look. We feel much safer in our home with them and it really helps with the electric bills.”

Common Questions
Your questions, answered.
Answers to what Metro Phoenix restaurants and bars ask us most about rolling screens, from comfort and bugs to monsoon wind, cost, and the controls your staff will use every day.
01What are rolling screens, and how do they work on a restaurant patio?
Rolling screens are retractable screens made of exterior mesh that roll down over an opening from a slim housing mounted above it and run in side tracks on both edges. On a restaurant or bar patio, a screen sits in each open side between the columns, so staff can lower the ones facing the sun or the street and leave the rest open. Roll one back up and it disappears into its housing, so the patio looks the way it did before.
02How do motorized retractable screens work?
A motor inside the housing raises and lowers the mesh, and the screen travels up and down in its side tracks, which hold it taut. Every motorized screen comes with a handheld remote. Built-in obstacle detection means that if something is in the way as the screen comes down, the motor senses it and stops on its own, which matters on a busy patio with chairs and guests moving around. A gear-operated manual version is available for small, occasional openings.
03What is the difference between patio screens and a restaurant patio enclosure?
Mostly scale. Patio screens are individual outdoor screens, each covering one opening. Patio enclosures are what you get when screens close every open side of a covered patio at once: the roof closes the top and the screens close the sides. For a restaurant patio enclosure, that usually means a run of screens between the columns, grouped on one control. Unlike a screened room or a fixed frame, the enclosure disappears when you retract the screens.
04Are these commercial motorized shades or window shades?
They are exterior motorized shades. Commercial motorized shades, commercial patio shades, and commercial motorized roller shades are all names people use for mesh that rolls down outside an opening, so the sun lands on the screen before it reaches your guests or your glass. On storefront glass the same system works as retractable window screens. We do not install interior commercial motorized window shades or roller shades, so for inside the dining room an interior shade company is the right call.
05What is the difference between residential and commercial retractable screens?
The screen itself is the same system. Residential rolling screens go on covered patios, sliding doors, and windows, and commercial rolling screens go on restaurant and bar patios, service counters, drive-thru windows, and storefront openings. What changes is the job: commercial openings are quoted individually, because access, mounting, and span vary far more than they do on a home. The written warranty terms are identical for both, while our residential financing plans do not apply to commercial projects.
06Do retractable patio screens keep out bugs?
With motorized insect screens lowered, yes, at that opening. Insect screens use a tight-weave mesh sealed into the side tracks, so mosquitoes, flies, gnats, and crickets stay on the outside while your guests keep the air and the view. The screen is not a hermetic seal, and it does nothing about what is breeding nearby. The edge that matters most is the threshold under the bottom bar, so we assess it at the estimate and tell you what it means before you decide.
07How do privacy screens work?
Privacy screens work by weave density. Open sun-control mesh is woven loosely enough to see through, while outdoor privacy screens use a far tighter weave, so an opening that was on display reads as a solid panel from the street or the parking lot. Light matters too: mesh privacy is directional and strongest when it is brighter outside than in, and it changes at sunset, so a sun or view-through mesh is not a nighttime privacy solution on its own.
08Does sun-control mesh make a Phoenix restaurant patio more comfortable?
It makes the patio more comfortable to sit on, because the sun lands on the mesh instead of on your guests. The sun-control mesh we fit is rated by the manufacturer to block up to 95% of heat and UV, and it keeps the view and the airflow. Darker colors like Black and Charcoal give the crispest view out and the best glare control. How much difference your guests notice depends on which way each opening faces, so a specialist checks every exposure on site.
09What colors do retractable screens come in?
Six fabric colors and six frame colors. The UV-blocking performance mesh comes in Black, Charcoal, Espresso, Tumbleweed, Tobacco, and Sable, and the powder-coated aluminum frame and housing come in White, Mocha, Taupe, Black, Bronze, and Grey. Darker mesh stays the clearest to see through, and earth tones blend into desert exteriors. For the 4-week install timeline, the in-stock choices are Espresso, Black, Tobacco, and Tumbleweed fabric with Bronze, Mocha, or White frames.
10What openings can take retractable screens for a patio?
Most of them. The system fits any opening with something solid to mount to: covered patios, pergolas, retractable porch screens on a porch, and retractable window screens on storefront glass, with the housing face-mounted to a wall, fascia, or beam or recessed into a soffit or pocket. Screens for a patio, porch, or pergola mount to the structure already around the opening, so most go on with no rebuild. Service counters and drive-thru windows take them too, and a specialist confirms the structure on site.
11Do motorized screens need wiring at the patio?
Not always. A solar-powered motor runs from a small panel that charges a battery in the housing, so there is no wiring to bring to the opening and no electrician. Battery options cover openings too shaded for solar, and both keep working when the power is out. A hardwired motor suits openings with power nearby and pairs with a wall switch. Your specialist recommends one per opening, since a single patio often ends up with a mix of both.
12Can staff raise and lower motorized screens from one spot, or on a schedule?
Yes. Every motorized screen comes with a handheld remote, and several screens can be grouped on one channel so one button runs a whole side of the patio. A wall switch beside the door gives staff a permanent control anyone can use. Add a Bond Bridge hub and the screens run from a phone, on schedules that drop them for the hottest part of the afternoon, or by voice through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. A sun sensor can also lower them as the light climbs.
13Do retractable porch screens hold up to monsoon wind?
Raise them before a storm. Zip-track screens lock the mesh into the rails so it stays taut in everyday gusts, but in a real monsoon gust the safest place for any screen is rolled up in its housing, and a motor brings it up in seconds. Maricopa County warns that dust storms often come with no warning, so a wind sensor that retracts the screens automatically when gusts pick up is worth considering. Wind damage is not covered under any rolling screen warranty.
14How do you clean patio screens and other outdoor screens?
If you are wondering how to clean patio screens, or how to clean outdoor screens of any kind, hose the mesh with clear water about once a month, in place. For a deeper clean, brush off loose dirt, then wash with water and a mild natural soap, not a detergent, using a soft-bristle brush, and rinse. For mildew or roof run-off stains, mix half a cup of chlorine bleach and a quarter cup of natural soap into a gallon of water, brush it on, and rinse. Skip pressure washers, and let the mesh dry before rolling it up.
15How much do retractable screens cost?
It depends on the openings. Wider and taller openings use more mesh and track and call for heavier-duty motors, which makes size the biggest driver of price, followed by the mesh you choose, the motor and controls, and how the housing mounts. Multi-screen projects are priced per opening, and doing several at once is more efficient than separate visits. Our cost guide shows typical installed ranges, and your exact price comes in writing after a free on-site estimate.
16How much are motorized screens compared with manual ones?
A motorized screen costs more than a gear-operated manual one, because the motor, the remote, and any added controls are part of the build. Most commercial patios go motorized anyway: wide or high openings are hard work by hand, and staff can run several screens from one control. So how much do motorized patio screens cost? The motor matters too: a solar motor costs a little more upfront than a hardwired one, but needs no new wiring or electrician.
17Are retractable screens worth it for a restaurant patio?
That comes down to how you use the patio. Screens let you drop shade on the sunny side during service, keep insect mesh down in the evening, soften the view of the street, and retract everything when you want the open air back. The fabric carries a 10-year warranty against fading and the motor a 5-year warranty. A specialist can walk your openings and put a written price in front of you, so you can weigh it against how you use the space today.
18What warranty comes with rolling screens?
Every rolling screen we install carries a limited warranty: 10 years on the fabric against fading, 5 years on the motor, 5 years on extrusions and parts, 2 years on electronic components, and 1 year on installation labor. The terms are identical for residential and commercial installations and start on the installation date. Wind damage, closing on objects, modification, and misuse are excluded, and warranty service comes from the same local Metro Phoenix team that installed the screens.
19How quickly can motorized retractable patio screens be installed?
Under our 4-Week Install Guarantee, we install your motorized retractable patio screens within 4 weeks of your deposit, or you get $500 back. The clock starts the day the deposit is placed, applies to the in-stock colors, and begins after the site visit when one is required. Many commercial projects qualify; commercial openings are quoted individually, and we confirm eligibility before you commit to a deposit. Outside the guarantee, your specialist gives you a realistic install window at the quote.
