Measuring, ordering and installing · Rolling Shutter Guide
What comes with a rolling shutter, and what should I check when it arrives?
A shipped rolling shutter arrives as an assembled box with the curtain already rolled on the axle, two guide rails, a U-channel if ordered, the operator parts and a parts kit. Count the boxes against the packing list with the driver present, note any damage on the delivery receipt, and report problems within 2 business days.
Key facts
- Every Roll-A-Shield kit has the assembled shutter box with the slat roll connected to the axle, two guide rails, a U-channel if you ordered one, the operator parts and a parts kit with a bag of standard fasteners. Roll-A-Shield data
- Each carton is labeled with the customer name, the shutter number and an X-of-Y box count; the count is boxes, not shutters, because a curtain can ship in its own box. Roll-A-Shield data
- A rolled curtain over 80 lb ships in a separate box from the shutter box. Roll-A-Shield data
- Freight damage has to be reported within 2 business days, and the freight claim is filed by whoever paid the freight. Roll-A-Shield data
- A solar panel leaves the factory charged but can drain in transit; it only charges once it is plugged into the motor's lead. Roll-A-Shield data
Applies to: Rolling shutters shipped for self-installation or to a contractor; Roll-A-Shield pull-strap, crank, spring, wired switch, remote, OZRoll battery and Gaposa solar shutters.
A rolling shutter shipped for self-installation arrives mostly assembled: the curtain is already rolled onto the axle inside the box, so what you check on delivery is the count, the condition of the cartons and the small parts. This page lists what is in a Roll-A-Shield kit for each operator type and the checks to make while the driver is still there.
What comes in the box?
Every kit has the same core parts; the operator adds its own.
- The shutter box, assembled, with the slat roll connected to the axle inside it. A strap is wrapped around the roll so it cannot unroll; leave it in place until the box is seated in the rails.
- Two guide rails.
- A U-channel for the bottom of the opening, if you ordered one. Spring shutters get a one-piece L-angle there instead of a U-channel.
- A parts kit with a bag of standard fasteners, plus rail plugs when your order includes them.
- Some spare slat, and the install guide for your operator type.
- The motor maker's own instructions, in the parts bag, on motorized shutters.
- Furring, extra U-channel or a storm bar, only if they are on your order.
| Operator | What it adds to the kit |
|---|---|
| Pull strap | Pull-strap box, diamond roller, anti-lift brackets |
| Crank strap | Crank box and handle, diamond roller, anti-lift brackets |
| Spring (push-pull) | Two spring rods for setting up the spring |
| Wired switch motor | Wall switch and wall plate; the junction box and cable are not included, and the licensed electrician who makes the mains connection supplies them |
| Remote motor | Somfy or Gaposa remote, and a wall-mount kit if ordered |
| Battery (OZRoll) | E-Port wall plate, AC/DC adapter and the controller |
| Solar (Gaposa) | Solar panel, remote and wall-mount kit |
| Manual override motor | The override wand, packed in the foam, inside the shutter box, or in the parts carton |
The number of anti-lift brackets depends on the size of the shutter. A solar panel leaves the factory charged but can drain in transit, and it only charges once it is plugged into the motor's lead, so a flat panel on day one is normal.
How is a rolling shutter packed?
Each shutter ships in a long carton on foam blocks, with the parts gathered and photographed before the carton is sealed.
- The carton is 26 in longer than the shutter for a 6.5 to 8 in shutter box and 32 in longer for a 9 to 12 in box, with a foam block at each end.
- Foam blocks hold the shutter in the carton: 3 for a shutter up to 60 in, 4 for 60 to 120 in, and 5-6 above that.
- A curtain over 80 lb ships in its own box, labeled to match its shutter.
- Every carton carries the customer name, the shutter number and a box count such as "2 of 6". The count is boxes, not shutters.
- A packing list for the whole order rides in a sleeve on the top box. It lists everything that is not attached to a shutter: remotes, switches, rods, U-channel, furring.
Shutters under 96 in long can travel by parcel carrier; longer ones go by freight on a pallet. Packing and freight are covered in more detail on how rolling shutters are packed and shipped.
What should I check while the driver is there?
Check the count and the outside of every carton before you sign, and write any problem on the delivery receipt.
- Count the cartons against the box count on the labels and the packing list.
- If a carton is missing, write the number of missing packages on the delivery receipt and have the driver initial it.
- Walk each carton end to end. Note any damage on the receipt, even a minor dent, because it can mean damage inside, and have the driver initial it.
- Photograph the damage and the packaging around it before anything is thrown away.
- Keep the delivery receipt and the carrier's paperwork; a freight claim needs them.
Then open everything promptly and report any damage, shortage or wrong item within 2 business days. The freight claim is filed by whoever paid the freight: Roll-A-Shield files it if it arranged and paid for the freight. What happens after that is on receiving a freight delivery and what to do about damage.
What should I check when I unpack it?
Check the parts against your order, not just against damage.
- Inside the box cover. Roll-A-Shield's freight policy asks you to inspect inside the shutter box as well as the carton. The cover comes off with four screws; keep them.
- The curtain. Look along the rolled slats for dents.
- Color. Slat, box and rail colors match what you ordered.
- Operator and side. The strap or motor is on the side you ordered: the strap exits the back of the box on the control side, and on a motor shutter the motor sits on the control side.
- Small parts. Every remote, switch, rod and bracket on the packing list.
Do not lift the box by its ears or rest its weight on them: the ears that drop into the rails are cast and can break.
A part seems to be missing. Where should I look first?
Look in the packing before you report it, because small parts are packed where they fit.
- Open every carton, including the one with the curtain if it shipped separately; the parts bag often rides inside the shutter box.
- An override wand is in the foam, inside the shutter box, or in the parts carton.
- A spring shutter's bottom support is an L-angle, not a U-channel.
- Optional items (U-channel, furring, storm bar, extra remotes) ship only if they are on the order; check the packing list.
If it is still missing, call (480) 921-0200 with the order name and shutter number. Roll-A-Shield photographs each order before sealing it, so it can check whether the part went out.
What if the wrong thing was built?
Call with photos. When Roll-A-Shield built something wrong, such as a motor on the wrong side or the wrong accessory, it reviews the photos, decides whether a few parts or a rebuilt unit will fix it, and moves the correction ahead of regular production. How soon it ships depends on what has to be made, so ask for a date when you call. Damage from handling during your own install is not a freight or build issue; replacement parts are quoted.

Frequently asked questions
Do the screws come with the shutter?
The parts kit includes a bag of standard fasteners and the square-drive screws that pin a U-channel to the rails. The screws that fix the guide rails and U-channel to your wall are yours to supply, chosen for the wall: Tapcon screws in brick or concrete, wood screws in wood, long deck screws through stucco.
Is the remote already paired to the motor?
Yes. The remote is programmed to the motor at the factory and the travel limits are preset, but in rare cases the limits drift in shipping, so watch the first full run and stop the shutter if it does not stop on its own.
Do I need a loading dock or a liftgate for delivery?
Tell Roll-A-Shield before the order ships about anything at the delivery address that affects a freight truck, such as no loading dock or a steep grade. Roll-A-Shield's freight policy does not cover delivery problems caused by address conditions that were not recorded.
How long do I have to report damage?
Note it on the delivery receipt while the driver is there, then report it to Roll-A-Shield within 2 business days with photos.
