Motorized Security Shutters

Motorized Security Shutters

What are motorized security shutters?

Motorized security shutters are automated aluminum shutters that open and close with the push of a button, a smartphone app, or a programmed schedule. They protect homes and businesses from break-ins, storms, heat, glare, and outside visibility — while adding everyday convenience and smart-home control.

At Roll-A-Shield, every motorized security shutter is custom-made in our Tempe, Arizona facility. Every shutter is built to fit, and backed by decades of experience protecting properties since 1979.

Why Choose Us

Why choose motorized over manual shutters?

Manual rolling shutters operated by hand crank or strap are perfectly capable and considerably less expensive. Motorization is an upgrade, not a requirement. Here is what the upgrade actually buys you.

Convenience

A homeowner with manual shutters on every window in a 2,000-square-foot single-story home typically spends 10 to 15 minutes a day opening and closing them in summer. With motorized shutters, that time is zero — one button or one voice command moves every shutter on the property simultaneously.

Smart Home Automation

Your motorized shutters become part of your smart home. Open all east-facing shutters at dawn. Close all west-facing shutters at 3:00 p.m. to keep out the afternoon heat. Activate “away mode” from your phone when you leave town. Manual shutters simply can’t do this.

Storm & Hurricane Response Time

When monsoon storms or hurricane warnings hit, manual shutters require you to be home, awake, and physically present to crank every opening shut. Motorized shutters close every window in the house in under 60 seconds — even if you’re at work, on vacation, or asleep.

Accessibility & Multi-Window Use

For homeowners with mobility limitations, second-story windows out of reach, or rooms with five or more openings (like glass-walled sunrooms), manual operation is genuinely impractical. Motorization removes the physical barrier entirely.

Voice Control & Home Automation

Roll-A-Shield motorized shutters work natively with the leading smart-home platforms. Somfy motors connect to Somfy TaHoma, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT, and Control4. Gaposa motors connect through compatible hubs to the same ecosystems.

Motorized Hurricane & Storm Protection

Motorization turns hurricane and storm prep from an hours-long job into a one-touch action. Both our manual and motorized hurricane shutters are built with interlocking hurricane-rated extruded aluminum slats and reinforced side rails, with an optional storm bar for the highest wind-load configurations.

How They Work

How motorized security shutters work.

Every Roll-A-Shield motorized security shutter is built around a simple but reliable system. Interlocking aluminum slats roll up into a compact head box mounted above the window or door, while a tubular motor inside powers the shutter smoothly and quietly.

1

Headbox

A slim aluminum housing mounted above the window or door. It hides the rolled-up slats and the tubular motor when the shutter is open.

2

Interlocking aluminum slats

Foam-filled or solid extruded aluminum slats interlock as they descend, forming a continuous barrier that resists prying, impact, and wind.

3

Side tracks lock slats in place

Powder-coated side tracks on both sides of the opening guide the slats and lock them into the wall, eliminating pry points and keeping the shutter rigid in high wind.

4

Sealed bottom rail

When the shutter is fully closed, a weather-sealed bottom rail meets the sill to block intruders, debris, and noise.

Operation Methods

One of the biggest advantages of motorized rolling shutters is flexibility. Pick the control style that fits your lifestyle — most homeowners combine more than one. Use wall switches in bedrooms while managing the whole house through a smartphone app.

Handheld Remote

Single-channel and multi-channel remotes let you operate one shutter, a selected group, or every shutter on the property from anywhere in the home.

Wall Switch

A simple, modern wall switch gives you easy everyday control right next to the window or door — just like flipping a regular light switch.

Smartphone App

Control your motorized shutters from anywhere over Wi-Fi or cellular. Set schedules, scenes, and grouped controls for different rooms or sides of the house.

Voice Assistant

Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home through supported smart-home hubs. Operate shutters hands-free with simple voice commands.

Timer / Sun-sensor

Program shutters to open and close on schedule — by time of day, sunrise and sunset, or routines like vacation mode and summer heat protection.

Motors We Use

Every Roll-A-Shield motorized shutter ships with a Somfy or Gaposa tubular motor — two global manufacturers with decades of proven reliability in the rolling-shutter industry. Both support remote, wall-switch, and smart-home integration. Gaposa motors come standard with the Roll-A-Shield Gaposa remote line we stock for service and replacement. Somfy motors integrate natively with the Somfy TaHoma smart-home hub for whole-home automation.

Materials & Customization

Pick the shutter built for your project.

Roll-A-Shield motorized security shutters are crafted from extruded aluminum, chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and durability. Slat thickness determines strength, insulation, and span — here’s how to choose the right line for your openings.

Where to Use Them

Where to put motorized security shutters.

Motorized security shutters can be fitted to almost any window or door opening. Motorization makes the most economical sense in these specific applications.

Hard-to-Reach Windows

Second-story windows, transom windows above doors, and high atrium glass that would otherwise need a ladder and a hand crank.

Large Openings

Sliding glass doors, picture windows, and patio enclosures where the manual strap or crank is actually a workout.

Multi-Window Rooms

Sunrooms, glassed-in living rooms, and master bedrooms with three or more windows that all close with a single button.

Storefronts & Commercial Glass

After-hours security when staff don’t want to crank every window shut by hand at closing.

Second & Vacation Homes

Schedule-driven open/close cycles, and remote “close” when you can’t be there.

Accessibility-Focused Installs

Homes where residents are elderly, have mobility limitations, or simply prefer to operate things by touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Get answers to the most common questions about motorized security shutters.

01How much do motorized security shutters cost?

Expect $1,200 to $2,200 per standard window installed. Sliding doors and large picture windows typically run $2,000 to $3,800 each. A whole-home package of 8 to 15 motorized openings generally lands between $12,000 and $25,000 with volume pricing. Final price depends on opening size, motor brand (Somfy or Gaposa), and the control package — basic remote is more budget-friendly than a full smart-home setup with app and voice control.

02Are motorized shutters worth it?

For most homeowners with three or more shutter openings, yes. The protection against break-ins and bad weather is the same as with manual shutters, but motorization lets you control the whole house in under a minute. That’s a game-changer in monsoon or hurricane country where every second counts before a storm hits. It also eliminates a daily hassle for homeowners with mobility challenges or windows that are hard to reach.

03Can you automate existing rolling shutters?

In most cases, yes. Roll-A-Shield can retrofit Somfy or Gaposa tubular motors into many existing rolling-shutter systems, replacing the original hand crank or strap mechanism. The retrofit needs the existing head box to have enough internal clearance for the new motor, and wiring needs to be run discreetly to a wall switch or hidden control unit. We do a free on-site inspection to confirm compatibility before quoting.

04Do motorized shutters work during a power outage?

Yes, with the right setup. Every Roll-A-Shield motor accepts an emergency manual override — a hand crank that lets you raise or lower the shutter when power is out. Many homeowners also add a small battery backup so a single outage doesn’t strand the shutters in either position. Discuss the backup option during your estimate; it’s a small adder for big peace of mind.

05What is the difference between motorized and electric shutters?

There is no real difference — they’re the same product. “Motorized,” “electric,” “automatic,” and “smart” shutters all describe rolling aluminum shutters with an electric motor built into the head box. Different shoppers use different words; the industry uses all four interchangeably.

06Can motorized shutters connect to Alexa or Google Home?

Yes. Roll-A-Shield motorized shutters work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Somfy TaHoma, Control4, and IFTTT through compatible hubs. Once installed, you can create named groups like “front of house,” “bedroom shutters,” or “whole home” and control them with simple voice commands or app scenes.

07Do motorized security shutters increase home value?

Yes. Motorized security shutters add convenience, security, and energy efficiency that many buyers see as premium upgrades. Smart-controlled rolling shutters can also improve curb appeal and help protect windows and doors from weather and break-ins — positive signals for appraisers and buyers in storm-prone regions.

08How long do motorized security shutters last?

High-quality motorized rolling shutters can last 20 to 30 years or more with proper maintenance. Roll-A-Shield systems use durable extruded aluminum slats and European-engineered Somfy and Gaposa motors designed for long-term daily use. All Roll-A-Shield shutters come with our 5-year shutter and motor warranty (parts), 2-year electronic components, and 1-year labor.

09Are motorized security shutters noisy when opening or closing?

No. Modern motorized shutters operate quietly and smoothly. Somfy and Gaposa motors use soft-start and soft-stop technology to reduce vibration and noise during operation. Most homeowners describe the sound as a gentle whisper rather than the mechanical clack of older systems.

10Can motorized shutters help lower energy bills?

Yes. Motorized shutters help cut energy bills by blocking heat, sunlight, and UV rays before they hit your windows. Many homeowners use automatic scheduling to close shutters during the hottest part of the day, which lowers cooling costs and makes indoor spaces more comfortable. In Phoenix-area homes we typically see 10 to 15% reductions in summer cooling load on heavily shuttered rooms.
