How do rolling shutters work?

Interlocking aluminum slats roll up into a hidden headbox above your opening. Press a button or turn a crank to lower them, and they lock into the side tracks for total protection.

Cutaway diagram of a Roll-A-Shield rolling shutter labeling the headbox, slats, side tracks, and bottom rail
1

Slats roll up into the headbox

When open, the entire shutter coils inside a slim aluminum housing mounted above your window or door. From outside, all you see is the headbox.

2

Press a button or turn a crank

Choose electric with a remote or wall switch, or spring-loaded manual operation. Solar power is also available for openings without nearby wiring.

3

Slats lock into side tracks

As the shutter lowers, each slat slides into aluminum tracks on both sides. The result is a sealed barrier rated for high winds.

4

Total protection in seconds

Closed shutters block sun, heat, dust, noise, and break-in attempts. Open them for full daylight or close them partially for adjustable shade.

03 / What Drives The Price

What factors influence the cost of roller shutters?

Each project is unique. These key factors determine your price, and we will walk you through every detail on a free in-home consultation, with no pressure and no surprise add-ons at the end.

01

Size of the opening

Every shutter is priced as a base plus per-square-foot rate. Width and height combine into the square footage that drives the rate.

$29 to $34 / sq ft

02

Operation type

Spring-loaded manual is the most economical. Electric with a remote adds a motor and a wall switch and is the most popular choice for residential openings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing questions, answered.

01How much do roller shutters usually cost?

Installed roller shutters from Roll-A-Shield typically run $950 to $5,500 per opening, depending on size, slat profile, and operation type. A small bedroom window starts around $950, a patio enclosure runs $2,500 to $4,500, and a full commercial storefront starts at $4,000 and typically falls between $4,500 and $11,000. Most homes have 6 to 14 openings, so a whole-home project commonly lands between $8,000 and $40,000 depending on scope.

02Why do some shutters cost more than others?

Three things drive the price gap: slat material and size (38mm Mini Foam is lighter and cheaper than 63mm hurricane-rated HD), operation type (manual is cheaper than motorized), and material quality (foam-filled aluminum costs more than thin steel or vinyl, but lasts 15 to 25+ years instead of 3 to 5). Cheap shutters look similar on a quote sheet but have very different lifespans, warranties, and storm ratings.

03Are motorized shutters worth the extra cost?

For most residential customers, yes. Motorized operation with a Somfy or Gaposa motor adds convenience for daily use, integrates with smart-home and timer systems, and is essential for openings that are physically hard to crank (high windows, large patio doors, anywhere you would not realistically reach every day). Manual is the right call when budget is tight or when the opening is small enough that you genuinely will not mind cranking it.

04Can I get an exact price before installation?

Yes. After a free in-home measurement (or a self-measurement worksheet for non-Phoenix customers), you receive a written quote with the exact installed price for every opening. The price on your written quote is the price you pay. No surprise add-ons, no upsells before you sign.

05What factors influence the cost of roller shutters?

Four factors: size of the opening (priced as base plus $29 to $34 per square foot), operation type (manual or electric), slat profile (38mm, 55mm, 63mm solid, or 63mm perforated HD), and color choice (8 standard colors are included at no extra charge). Geography matters too, since installation labor is included in Arizona but handled by your local dealer outside our direct-install zone.

06Are motorized shutters more expensive than manual ones?

Yes. Motorized adds the cost of the motor itself, a wall switch or remote, and any wiring or solar-power kit needed for the opening. The premium varies by opening size but is typically a few hundred dollars per shutter. For most homeowners that pays for itself in convenience over the 15 to 25+ year lifespan.

07Do insulated shutters cost more than non-insulated shutters?

Slightly. Foam-filled slats (38mm Mini Foam, 55mm Standard Foam) cost a small premium over our solid extruded aluminum profiles, but they block heat, cold, and outside noise much better. In hot Arizona summers and cold mountain winters, that insulation usually pays back through lower energy bills within a few years.

08Can customization affect the price of roller shutters?

Every Roll-A-Shield is built to fit your exact opening to within 1/8 of an inch, so custom sizing itself is built into the price, not an upcharge. Where custom choices do affect price: oversized openings that require HD profiles, solar power for openings without nearby wiring, and any optional integrations like smart-home wiring or timers.

09Are roller shutters a long-term investment?

Yes. A Roll-A-Shield installed today will typically last 15 to 25+ years with normal use, backed by a 5-year warranty on shutter parts and motors, plus 2 years on electronic components. Most customers see the investment back through some combination of lower energy bills, lower insurance premiums in storm zones, deterred break-ins, and the avoided cost of replacing cheaper shutters every 3 to 10 years.
