How it is made · Rolling Shutter Guide
What does a rolling shutter get checked for before it ships?
Roll-A-Shield checks every shutter at four stages: before the box is assembled, just before the curtain rolls up, a final check, and a parts check. The checks cover curtain size, undamaged slats, the right motor and control side, a remote for each shutter, charged solar panels, smooth key locks and a complete parts bag.
Key facts
- Quality control runs at four stages: before the box is assembled, right before roll-up, a final check, and a parts check. Roll-A-Shield data
- On a shutter Roll-A-Shield installs, the first check compares the field remeasure with the cut sheet; self-install orders have no remeasure, so that step is skipped. Roll-A-Shield data
- The axle size is recorded as 40, 60 or 70 mm, aluminum or steel, along with the hanging-strap length. Roll-A-Shield data
- Entry rollers are only possible on boxes of 10 in and up; on 9 in and smaller boxes the guide rails are flared instead. Roll-A-Shield data
- Self-install shipments are photographed before and after packing, and the photos are kept with the order. Roll-A-Shield data
Applies to: Roll-A-Shield rolling shutters built in Tempe: insulated and single-wall slats; Gaposa, Somfy and OZRoll motors; manual-override, solar, battery, crank, strap and spring operation; installed and shipped orders.
At what stages is a shutter checked?
Four, in order, from the bare parts to the packed shipment.
- Before the box is assembled: the motor side and related details are checked.
- Right before roll-up: the last look at the assembled curtain before it goes into the box.
- Final check: the finished shutter.
- Parts check: everything that ships separately from the shutter.
On a shutter Roll-A-Shield installs, the very first check compares the remeasure taken on site with the cut sheet, overall size against clear opening. Self-install orders have no remeasure, so they are built straight from the customer's measurements. That is why measuring correctly matters on a shipped shutter.
What is checked on the curtain and slats?
The curtain is checked for size, damage and consistency before it is rolled up.
- Size: curtain width × length matches the cut sheet.
- Condition: no damaged or scratched slats.
- Not short-slatted: the curtain has its full slat count.
- Branding: a brand sticker on the end slat.
- Single-wall curtains: end retention is recorded as none, every slat or every other slat, and gloss levels of the same color are never mixed in one curtain. See what end retention is.
What is checked on the motor or operator?
The operator check depends on how the shutter runs. For every motor, the inspector confirms the motor side, the end cap and control side, the wire exit, and the motor maker (Gaposa, Somfy or OZRoll), and records the motor size.
| Operator | Checked and included |
|---|---|
| Remote motor | Each remote listed against its shutter number; any shutter without a remote is flagged |
| Wired switch motor | Limit components confirmed; momentary or maintained switch recorded |
| Manual-override motor | Override type and exit location recorded; the override wand is in the shipment |
| Solar (Gaposa) | Panel charged and included; charger and extension cords included |
| Battery (OZRoll) | Dock, charger, battery and limit tool included; battery charged |
| Crank or pull strap | Diamond roller and anti-lift brackets; crank box or strap box |
| Spring | Two tensioning-rod tools included |
Limits are preset before the shutter leaves, and on remote shutters the remote is pre-programmed to the motor. Solar panels are charged before packing.
What is checked on the axle, color and locks?
Each of these is recorded on the check sheet.
- Axle: size (40, 60 or 70 mm), aluminum or steel, and the hanging-strap length. A 70 mm axle needs a divot in its adjustable insert.
- Color: the shutter color is recorded, mixed-color shutters are flagged, and grey and natural are double-checked. Beige parts are checked to make sure the box and rails match.
- Locks: on spring or strap shutters with a key lock or slide lock, the lock position is recorded and the latch holes or notch in the guide rail are confirmed.
- Key action: keys are tested in the bottom-bar lock for smooth insertion and removal; a key that binds gets dry lubricant before the shutter leaves.
What is checked on the rails and box?
Guide rails are checked for the mount and the box they go with.
- The slat channel is bevelled at the top so the curtain feeds in.
- The mount configuration (inside, outside or recessed) and the number of holes per rail are recorded.
- Sand and bronze rails get larger exterior holes to take their hole caps.
- Entry rollers are only possible on 10 in and larger boxes; at 9 in and smaller the rails are flared instead. See flared rails and entry rollers.
What goes in a shipped shutter, and what is photographed?
A self-install shipment is packed against a checklist and photographed.
- Curtain foam, a metal axle insert, extra slats, the install guide and screws.
- The motor maker's documentation, in the parts bag with the paperwork.
- Printed instructions and QR codes for remote, keypad and troubleshooting help, bagged with small parts such as the remote.
- A packing list, stapled to the top box, of everything not on the shutter itself.
- Photos before and after packing, kept with the order.
Carton and foam details are on how shutters are packed and shipped.
What should I check when it arrives?
Inspect the whole shipment as soon as it arrives, including inside the box cover, note any damage or shortage on the delivery receipt in front of the driver, and photograph it. Report freight damage within 2 business days. The full checklist is on what ships with a rolling shutter.

Frequently asked questions
Are the motor limits set before the shutter arrives?
Yes. On Roll-A-Shield motorized shutters the upper and lower limits are preset before shipping, and on remote shutters the remote is pre-programmed to the motor. You may still fine-tune a limit after installation.
Will a solar shutter arrive charged?
Solar panels are charged before packing, so there is normally enough charge to set the limits on arrival, and sunlight keeps them charged after that. The charge can run down if the shutter sits for a long time before installation.
How do I know my shutter matches my order?
The packing list stapled to the top box lists every part that is not on the shutter itself, and the shop checks overall heights, widths and colors against it before the shipment closes. Compare it with what arrives.
What if something is damaged or missing when it arrives?
Note it on the delivery receipt and report freight damage within 2 business days. Call (480) 921-0200 about any missing part.
