What colors do rolling shutters come in, and what is the finish?

Short answer

Roll-A-Shield's insulated slats come in 7 colors (White, Grey, Metallic, Bronze, Black, Beige, Sand) and its 63 mm single-wall slats in 5 (White, Metallic, Bronze, Black, Beige). The aluminum is finished at the factory, not painted on site. Box, rails and slats can match or be two-tone, and every color costs the same.

Applies to: Aluminum rolling shutters (roll-down security and storm shutters); Roll-A-Shield 38 mm and 55 mm insulated and 63 mm single-wall solid and perforated slats, boxes, guide rails, bottom slats, furring and wall switches.

Rolling shutters are sold in a short list of factory colors because the finish goes on the aluminum before the shutter is built, not after it is installed. On Roll-A-Shield shutters the list depends on the slat you choose: the insulated slats have more colors than the heavier 63 mm single-wall slat. If you are matching an existing shutter, start with matching replacement slats instead.

Which colors does each slat come in?

Roll-A-Shield offers 7 colors on its insulated slats and 5 on its 63 mm single-wall slats.

Color 38 mm and 55 mm insulated 63 mm single-wall (solid and perforated)
White Yes Yes
Grey Yes No
Metallic Yes Yes
Bronze Yes Yes

Beige Yes Yes
Sand Yes No

Two things to know before you choose. First, color availability can move with stock, so a rep confirms the exact color and slat combination on your quote. Second, older shutters may be in colors that are no longer on the list, such as cream or brown; if you are adding to or repairing one of those, say so before you order.

Do the box and guide rails come in the same color?

Usually, but they do not have to. The box, the slat curtain, the bottom slat and the guide rails are each ordered in a color. Choosing one solid color applies it to every part that is made in that color. The measure-and-order sheet has separate boxes for the slat color and the box-and-rail color.

That makes two-tone shutters straightforward: a black curtain in white rails and a white box is a normal order. Not every part is made in every color; when a rail or bottom slat does not come in your color, the factory uses the nearest one that does.

Other parts follow the shutter. Furring (the aluminum tube that stands a shutter off the wall) is powder-coated to match the guide rail, and the paddle wall switches come in White, Beige or Black.

Can I get a custom or RAL color?

No. Roll-A-Shield builds in its standard colors and does not take custom or RAL color orders; reps help you pick the closest standard color to your trim or stucco. Painting the shutter afterwards is not a workaround: see Can I paint my rolling shutters?.

Does the color change the price or lead time?

Every standard color is the same price; there is no color surcharge. The color can change the lead time when a color, or a part in that color, is short at the time you order, so check the date on your quote. For prices, see how much rolling shutters cost.

What is the finish, and how does it hold up?

The finish is applied at the factory before the shutter is built. Extruded aluminum parts are powder-coated, which holds up better than wet paint in shipping and handling; the insulated slats arrive with their finish already applied by the slat maker. Architects who need the coating specification for a particular color can ask for it with the spec sheets and samples.

The powder-coated finish is made for full sun and resists fading and corrosion. It is not fade-proof: over many years some fading happens, and it shows sooner on a shutter that faces direct sun all day.

You protect the finish by how you clean it: mild soap and water twice a year, no pressure washer, and not in extreme heat. Harsh household cleaners damage the finish.

Can I see the colors before I order?

Yes. Roll-A-Shield mails physical slat and color samples on request; ask by phone, chat or the contact form and give a mailing address.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a rolling shutter in a custom color to match my house?

Not from Roll-A-Shield. Shutters are built in the standard colors only; reps help you pick the closest one, and mailed samples let you compare against your trim or stucco. Repainting a shutter afterwards is not a workaround; see the page on painting rolling shutters.

Does the color change the price or the lead time?

Not the price: every standard color costs the same. Lead time can change if a color or a part in that color is short at the time you order, so confirm the date on your quote.

Will the color fade in the sun?

The finish is baked on at the factory and made for full sun, so it holds its color for many years. Over a long time some fading happens, sooner on a shutter that gets direct sun all day.

Can the box and guide rails be a different color from the slats?

Yes. Each part is ordered in its own color, so a two-tone shutter, for example a black curtain in white rails and box, is a normal order. Not every part is made in every color, so the factory picks the nearest available color for a part that does not come in yours.
