Metro Phoenix, AZ · Bug and Insect Protection
Keep the bugs out, keep the patio open: rolling screens for Metro Phoenix
Rolling screens close a patio, sliding door, window, garage opening, or restaurant patio against mosquitoes, gnats, flies, crickets, and scorpions without closing the opening. The mesh seals into side tracks on both edges, so nothing walks or flies through and you still get the air, the view, and the evening. Press a button and the screen drops at dusk, then retracts out of sight in the morning.
One local Roll-A-Shield team measures, installs, and services every screen from our Tempe facility, so the people who quoted your patio are the people who stand behind it.
One Mesh, Two Jobs
Same screen, day and night
A rolling screen is one fabric doing two jobs: the mesh takes the load off a west window or a covered patio while you keep the view and the airflow, and the same weave is tight enough that mosquitoes, flies, gnats, and crickets do not pass through it. What turns it into a barrier is the seal, side tracks on both edges, a weighted bottom bar at the threshold, and a housing that closes the top, so nothing walks under it or flies around it. Drop it at four for the afternoon, leave it down through dinner, and retract it whenever you want the opening clear.
If heat and glare are the bigger problem on your property, see patio shades and sun protection for Metro Phoenix on its own page.

Valley Pests
What stays outside the mesh
Lowered and sealed into its tracks, the mesh is a barrier at the opening. These are the ones Valley homeowners ask about.
Mosquitoes
Water by day, bites by evening
Standing water after monsoon rain or an irrigation cycle is where they come from, and evening is when they bite. A sealed screen keeps them on the outside of the patio while you keep the breeze.
Flies and gnats
Off the plates and the drinks
They find the plates, the drinks, and the dog bowl on any patio table. With the screen down there is no open edge for them to come through, so dinner outside stops being a hand-waving exercise.
Crickets
Night movers at the doorway
They are most active at night, they gather around doorways, and they head indoors as the nights cool in fall. A screen sealed at the threshold takes away the open doorway they were walking toward.
Wasps and bees
Out of the seating area
Paper wasps nest under eaves and in sheltered corners, yellowjackets are drawn to food and drinks in the warmer months, and foraging honey bees come looking for water. The mesh keeps them out of the seating area and off the table.
Palo verde beetles and summer flyers
Summer nights on the wing
The big beetles show up in early summer and stay through the hot months, flying mainly at night. Whatever is on the wing that week, a closed screen means it is bumping the mesh instead of landing on the patio.
Scorpions
A barrier at that opening
Bark scorpions move after dark, from the first warm nights of spring until the nights cool off in fall, and they get in through gaps at the bottom of doors. A lowered screen sealed into its tracks is a barrier at that opening. It does not scorpion-proof a building, and it does not replace door sweeps and weather-stripping on the doors it is not covering.
Why the Edges Matter
Sealed on all four edges
The mesh is only half of it. What keeps a patio closed is where the fabric meets the frame, so we check every edge at your property.
Side tracks
Side tracks or zip retention hold the mesh taut inside the rails on both edges. The fabric cannot pull free in a breeze and there is no loose edge for anything to walk around. On a wide span this is what keeps the screen a barrier instead of a curtain.
Bottom bar
A weighted bottom bar rides down the tracks and meets the threshold. On a flat, level surface it sits flush along its whole length, which is the edge that matters most at dusk.
Housing
The housing mounts above the opening and closes the top edge. The roll sits inside it, so the fabric comes straight down out of the housing with no gap along the header.
Your real threshold
An uneven deck, a flagstone patio, or a sloped drain line means the bottom bar meets a surface that is not flat, and a gap can open under one end. We assess the threshold at the estimate and tell you what it means for the seal before you decide, whether that is a different bottom bar, a track change, or a small fix to the surface. We do not promise a hermetic seal on any opening; we promise to tell you where the edges will and will not close.
Assessed at the estimate: your specialist checks the threshold and all four edges of every opening at your property and tells you where the screen will close and where it will not, before you decide anything.
Mesh & Color
One mesh, six colors
The fabric is the same on every screen. Color decides how clearly you see through the mesh, and how the screen reads against the house.
Fabric Colors
Performance mesh · 6 options
Darker tones like Black and Charcoal give the crispest see-through visibility. A dark mesh absorbs light rather than scattering it, so your eye reads through the weave instead of at it. Lighter earth tones like Tumbleweed and Tobacco blend into desert and Southwest exteriors and trade away some of that see-through crispness in return.
Frame & Housing Colors
Powder-coated aluminum · 6 options
Frame and housing color is a separate choice from fabric. Matched to the stucco, fascia, or trim, the housing disappears into the architecture when the screen is retracted.
On-screen colors are close approximations. Your specialist can show you physical mesh and frame samples and confirm the exact combination for your home or building during your free estimate.
Bug Season in the Valley
When bug season hits the Valley
Insect pressure in Metro Phoenix follows water, warmth, and the hour. It does not follow a calendar closely enough to print one here.
Monsoon water
Standing water left behind by monsoon rain is where mosquitoes multiply, and the low spots, backed-up washes, and neglected pools that hold it for days are the sources nearest most patios. A well-kept pool is not one of them. The screens go down in the evening while the water is still out there.
Flood-irrigated lots
Irrigation water that ponds on an over-watered or poorly leveled yard does the same job the rain does, on a schedule. On a flood-irrigated lot the yard is wet by design, and the patio next to it sees the results after dark. The screen is the part of the yard you control.
Scorpions in spring and fall
Bark scorpions are out after dark from the first warm nights of spring until the nights cool off in fall, and they are less active in the coolest months. Spring is when they reappear at doorways and patio walls, and fall is when the crickets they hunt head indoors. A screen sealed at the threshold is a barrier at that opening during those months, and no more than that.
Dusk is the pressure point
Mosquitoes bite most in the early evening, crickets and scorpions move after dark, and the summer beetles fly at night. The hours after sunset are the ones you bought shade to win back, and they are the ones a sealed screen keeps. Drop it at dusk on a schedule and it is closed before you notice the first one.
How You Run Them
Remote, solar, or switch
Both systems can be motorized. Here is how you run an opening day to day and keep it working when the power drops.

Run a single opening from a handheld remote, or wire it to a wall switch that stays put.

Motorized patio screens can use solar-powered motors, so no new wiring runs to the patio.

Integrate with common smart-home systems to run openings on a schedule or by voice.
Compare Your Options
How retractable bug screens compare
Each of these keeps insects out of somewhere. The question is what it does at a wide patio opening, and what it costs you the rest of the time.
| Option | Closes the opening at dusk | View and airflow kept | Opens again on demand | Works at a wide opening | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motorized retractable bug screens | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | Needs a proper measure and install, and a threshold that lets the bottom bar close. It is a barrier at the opening when it is down, not a hermetic seal, and it does nothing about what is breeding in the yard. |
| Sliding screen doors | Partly | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ | Inexpensive, familiar, and fine on a single door opening you walk through a few times an evening. They cover one door width. A covered patio open on two or three sides has no track to slide them in, the mesh sits loose in a light frame, and the bottom edge lives on a dirt-filled track that rarely seals. |
| Fixed patio screens | ✓ | Partly | ✗ | Partly | A permanent framed panel closes an opening completely and there is nothing to operate. The opening is closed all the time, including the afternoon you wanted it open. The view is behind mesh year-round, the frame stays up in the months nothing is flying, and a wide span needs posts or mullions to hold the panels. |
| Screened enclosures | ✓ | Partly | ✗ | ✓ | A full screen room encloses the whole patio, roof included, and works on all sides at once. It is a permanent structure. It changes the look of the house, it can need approvals, it fixes the patio at one size, and it is still there in the months you would rather have an open patio. |
| Sprays or foggers | ✗ | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ | Quick to apply and no installation. A treatment can thin out what is in the yard for a while. Nothing is closed. The opening is exactly as open as it was, so anything that arrives after the treatment wears off walks or flies straight in, and the product goes on the patio you eat on. |
The bottom line: a rolling insect screen is the one option here that closes the opening at dusk and opens it again in the morning. It is not a hermetic seal and it does not treat the yard; it is a barrier at the opening when you want one, and nothing when you do not.

Metro Phoenix
Bugs do not read zip codes. Pest pressure follows the property: a flood-irrigated lot in Mesa or Tempe, a Scottsdale yard backing onto a wash or a greenbelt, a golf corridor in Peoria or Chandler, a pool deck anywhere, or a desert-edge lot in Surprise or north Phoenix where the yard ends and the desert starts. We assess the openings and the thresholds at your property, not at a zip code, and we custom-fit and install custom rolling screens and motorized patio screens across Metro Phoenix.
We measure and install in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, and Surprise, and in the communities between them.

Bug screen questions, answered.
What Metro Phoenix homeowners and businesses ask us about rolling screens, retractable patio screens, and motorized insect screens.
01Do rolling screens keep bugs out?
Yes, when the screen closes at every edge. Rolling screens are a woven mesh that drops from a slim housing above the opening and runs in side tracks on both edges, with a weighted bottom bar that meets the threshold. Lowered, the screen is a physical barrier at that opening: mosquitoes, flies, gnats, crickets, and the rest are on the outside of the mesh and you are on the inside, with the air and the view still coming through. Raise it in the morning and the opening is completely clear. It is the same screen that takes the afternoon off the patio; the seal at the edges is what makes it a bug screen after dark.
02Are rolling screens, retractable screens, and motorized screens the same thing?
Mostly, yes. Rolling screens, retractable screens, retractable patio screens, and motorized retractable screens are different names for one system: a mesh that rolls down out of a housing, travels in side tracks, and retracts fully when you want the opening back. Motorized means a motor does the lifting, from a handheld remote, a wall switch, your phone, or a schedule. What changes from one opening to the next is the size, the color, and how you operate it, not the screen itself.
03Will a retractable mosquito screen for a patio actually keep mosquitoes out?
A retractable screen with its mesh sealed into the side tracks and closed at the bottom bar keeps mosquitoes on the outside of the patio while it is down. That matters most in the evening, which is when they bite, and after monsoon rain or an irrigation cycle has left standing water somewhere near the house. The screen does nothing about the water itself; it closes the opening between the yard and the table. Drop it at dusk on a schedule and it is closed before the first one arrives.
04How do you keep flies and mosquitoes away from a patio?
Take away what draws them and close the opening they use. Mosquitoes come from standing water, so empty what holds it after rain or irrigation and keep the pool maintained. Flies come for the food and the drinks, so cover the plates and the dog bowl and clear the table when dinner is over. Then close the patio itself with a retractable insect screen: lowered and sealed into its tracks, it is a barrier between the yard and the seating whether or not anything is breeding out there. Sprays and candles thin the numbers for a while; the screen closes the door.
05How do you keep bugs off a patio at night?
Night is the pressure point. Mosquitoes bite most in the early evening, crickets and scorpions move after dark, the summer beetles fly at night, and patio lighting draws flying insects toward the seating. Swap bright white bulbs for ones that attract fewer insects, keep the lights away from the table where you can, and put a motorized bug screen on a schedule so the patio is already closed when the sun goes down. A screen that is down before dusk keeps the evening; one you remember at nine o'clock closes the opening on whatever is already inside.
06How do you keep bugs off patio furniture?
Close the perimeter, then keep the furniture itself uninteresting. A retractable bug screen for the patio lowered across each open side puts the cushions, the table, and the outdoor kitchen behind the mesh, so nothing lands on them in the first place. Wipe spills and crumbs off the table and the seating after each meal, rinse the cushions when they get sticky, and keep pet food and open drinks off the furniture overnight. The screen retracts in the morning and the patio is open again.
07How do you keep crickets out of your house?
Crickets are most active at night, they gather around foundations and doorways, and they head indoors as the nights cool in fall. Start at the doors: fit door sweeps and weather-stripping so there is no gap under or around any door, and keep exterior lights off at night or use bulbs that attract fewer insects. Then close the patio and porch openings they walk toward with a retractable screen sealed at the threshold. A screen on the sliding door or the porch takes away the open doorway between the yard and the house, and it retracts when you want the doorway back.
08Do these screens keep scorpions out?
A lowered screen sealed into its tracks is a barrier at that opening, and that is the honest limit of the claim. Bark scorpions move after dark and get in through gaps at the bottom of doors, so a screen whose bottom bar closes against the threshold takes away the open patio doorway they were walking toward. It does not scorpion-proof a building. It covers the opening it is mounted on and nothing else, and it does not replace door sweeps and weather-stripping on the doors and windows it is not covering. If scorpions are the reason you are calling, tell your specialist at the estimate, because the threshold under the bottom bar is the edge that matters most and we assess it before we quote.
09Can you still see through a retractable insect screen, and does it block the breeze?
You can see through it and the breeze still moves. The mesh reads a little more like a screen and a little less than an open view, but the yard, the pool, and the lights beyond it stay visible and air passes through the weave. Darker mesh colors give the crispest see-through view from inside. That is the whole point of closing the opening with mesh rather than glass or a solid panel: the patio stays a patio. If you want the completely open view back, the screen retracts fully into its housing.
10Is a retractable bug screen for a patio also a sun screen or a privacy screen?
It is the same screen. Roll-A-Shield rolling screens use one mesh, so the retractable sun screen for a patio that takes the load off the west side at four in the afternoon is the retractable bug screen that closes the patio at dusk. There is nothing to swap and no second fabric to buy. On privacy, be realistic: it is a see-through mesh. In daylight a dark mesh reads darker from the street than the patio behind it, but after dark with the patio lamps on, anyone outside can see in. If daytime seclusion or a blackout is the goal, say so at the estimate and your specialist will tell you what fits.
11Do motorized bug screens need wiring or an electrician?
Not if you choose a solar motor. Solar motors run completely wireless: a slim panel keeps the built-in battery charged from daylight, so there is no new wiring to run, no electrician to schedule, and no holes cut in your walls. That puts motorized insect screens on a pergola at the back of the yard or a detached patio nowhere near existing power, and they keep working in an outage because they are not drawing from the house. Hardwired motors suit new builds and remodels where power is already at the header. Either way the screens run from a remote or a wall switch, and a small smart hub adds schedules, your phone, and voice control.
12What happens at the bottom of a retractable patio screen on an uneven patio or flagstone?
The bottom bar is a weighted bar that rides down the tracks and meets the threshold. On a flat, level surface it sits flush along its whole length. On an uneven deck, a flagstone patio, or a surface that slopes toward a drain, a gap can open under one end. We assess the threshold at the estimate and tell you what it means for the seal before you decide, whether the answer is a different bottom bar, a track change, or a small fix to the surface itself. We do not promise a hermetic seal on any opening. We promise to tell you where the edges will and will not close, at your property, before you commit to anything.
13Can retractable screens turn a covered patio into a patio enclosure?
Yes, and without building one. Put a motorized patio screen on each open side of a covered patio and, lowered together, they enclose it: the roof closes the top, the screens close the sides, and the bottom bars meet the threshold all the way around. Unlike a screened room or a fixed frame, the enclosure disappears when you retract the screens, so the patio is open in the months nothing is flying and closed on the evenings something is. Wide spans and corner-to-corner runs are measured individually at the estimate.
14Do retractable screens work on a patio door, a porch, windows, and a garage door?
Yes. The same system fits any opening with something solid to mount to. A retractable screen for a patio door or a sliding door closes the doorway without a swinging screen door in the way. Retractable porch screens, the roll up screen for a porch, close the porch openings one bay at a time and retracts into the header when you want them clear. Retractable insect screens for windows fit bedroom and kitchen windows that stay open for air at night. A bug screen for a garage door closes a full-width garage opening so a workshop or a gym stays open for airflow and closed to insects. Only the size and the operation change from one opening to the next.
15Do you install commercial rolling screens as well as residential rolling screens?
Both. Residential rolling screens go on covered patios, outdoor kitchens, sliding doors, porches, windows, and garage openings. Commercial rolling screens go on restaurant and bar patios, service counters, drive-thru windows, storefront openings, and school walkways, where the opening has to stay open to customers and closed to flies through dinner service. Commercial openings are measured individually because span, access, and mounting vary more than they do on a home. For after-hours security at a counter or a bar, the tool is a shutter, not a screen: see counter shutters that secure kiosks and bars after hours.
16How much does a retractable screen for a patio cost in Metro Phoenix?
There is no flat price, because no two openings are the same. What moves the number is opening size first, then how the screen is operated: a hardwired motor or a solar motor, and the controls you add. Mounting and access matter too, and a threshold that needs work before the bottom bar can close adds to the job. We put an exact written price in front of you at a free on-site quote with no obligation. If you want real numbers before talking to anyone, our Phoenix rolling screens cost breakdown shows ranges by opening size along with an interactive estimator.
17How fast can you install motorized retractable patio screens in Metro Phoenix?
We install your motorized patio screens within 4 weeks of your deposit, or you get $500 back. The term: your 4 week clock starts the day the deposit is placed. The term: $500 paid to you if installation falls outside the window. The term: *guarantee applies to the in-stock colors shown below. Any other color is yours on standard lead time. The term: where a pre installation site visit is required, the window begins once it is completed. Your eligibility is confirmed in writing before you place a deposit, never after. The in-stock colors are the four fabric colors Espresso, Black, Tobacco, and Tumbleweed, and the three frame colors Bronze, Mocha, and White. Every qualifying condition is set out in full on the 4-Week Install Guarantee page.
18Do retractable patio screens hold up to monsoon wind?
With the right track system, yes, and with the sense to retract them in a real blow. Zip side-retention tracks lock the fabric into the rails so it stays taut instead of billowing or pulling loose, which is what you want on a wide span. Even so, the safest place for any screen in a serious monsoon gust is up in its housing, and a wind sensor will retract it automatically. Wind damage is not covered under the fabric warranty, which is exactly why the sensor exists. If what an opening really needs is protection from storm debris and blown dust rather than insect control, a rolling shutter is the correct tool for that opening.
19What warranty comes with rolling screens?
The manufacturer warranty runs 10 years on the fabric against fading, 5 years on the motor, 5 years on the extrusions and parts, 2 years on the electronics, and 1 year on the installation labor. Fabric gets the longest term because Arizona sun is hardest on fabric. Wind damage is excluded, as is closing the shade on an object, unauthorized modification, misuse, and acts of God. After the first year, covered parts stay covered but labor for a repair becomes the customer's responsibility.
